Force-detected ESR Measurements in a Terahertz Range up to 0.5 THz and Application to Hemin

We report a novel force-detected high-frequency electron spin resonance (HFESR) technique using a microcantilever in the terahertz region. In this technique, we attach a tiny sample on the microcantilever end and the ESR signal is detected as the cantilever bending. The bending is sensitively detected by fiber-optic Fabry–Perot interferometry. We applied this technique to a tiny amount (~16 ng) of metalloporphyrin, a model substance of hemoproteins, and successfully observed ESR signals at multiple frequencies up to 0.5 THz. This result indicates that the sample volume needed in multi-frequency HFESR can be greatly reduced by several orders of magnitude, and our novel technique would be a promising tool for HFESR studies of metalloproteins in the future.     

The TESIS Solar imaging spectroscopy experiment on board the CORONAS-Photon satellite

The CORONAS-Photon spacecraft was successfully launched in January 2009. Its scientific payload included the TESIS complex of telescopes and spectrometers, designed to obtain high spectral, temporal and spatial resolution solar corona images in soft X-ray to far UV spectral range.     

Energy Characteristics of Small Metal Clusters Containing Vacancies

Self-consistent calculations of spatial distributions of electrons, potentials, and energies of dissociation, cohesion, vacancy formation, and electron attachment, as well as the ionization potential of solid Al _N , Na _N clusters (N ≥ 254), and clusters containing a vacancy (N ≥ 12) have been performed using a model of stable jellium. The contribution of a monovacancy to the energy of the cluster, the size dependences of the characteristics, and their asymptotic forms have been considered. The calculations have been performed on the SKIT-3 cluster at the Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Rpeak = 7.4 Tflops).     

Simple and efficient synthesis of substituted 1H-indazoles

3-Aryl-5-aroylindazoles were prepared by a simple two-stage protocol from 3,5-diaroyl-2,6-dimethylpyridines.     

Correlation Equations for Predicting the Temperature Depression in Boiling of Aqueous Solutions of Nonvolatile Substances

Three-constant correlation equations describing the boiling point of aqueous solutions of non-volatile substances and temperature depression in boiling of the solutions under normal and arbitrary pressures are considered. The three constants appearing in the correlation equations are tabulated for aqueous solutions of 19 nonvolatile substances, and formulas for determining these constants for other aqueous solutions of nonvolatile substances from experimental data are presented.     

Investigation of Inhomogeneites in Epitaxial AlxGa1−xN Layers Grown on Sapphire

 Procedures for the preparation of bevels and the determination of their geometrical parameters have been developed. Using these procedures study of compositional and optical spatially resolved inhomogeneities of Al_xGa_1−xN layers grown on (0001) sapphire have been studied by EPMA and cathodolu-minescence. It has been found that the nonuniform distribution in depth of Al in epitaxial layers grown under constant conditions is connected with presence of stresses in the layer.     

Spontaneous self-association of adenine and uracil in polycrystals from low temperature FTIR spectra in the range below 1000 cm(-1)

FTIR spectra of solid samples of co-crystallized adenine and uracil were measured at 10K in the range below 1000cm(-1). New bands ascribable to the N3H (uracil) and NH(2) (adenine) out of plane vibrations, which disappear upon D-exchange, were revealed in comparison with the spectra of pure polycrystalline adenine and uracil obtained in the same conditions. The observed changes relate to the same groups that establish the H-bonds in base pairs of naturally occurring nucleic acids, despite the presence of an extra proton donor NH-group in both molecules. The well-established empirical correlation between the out of plane NH vibrational frequencies and H-bond energies was successfully applied for estimation of the latter in the mixed crystal.
