Comparison theorems for the third order trinomial differential equations with delay argument

In this paper we study asymptotic properties of the third order trinomial delay differential equation (*) y‴(t) − p(t)y′(t) + g(t)y(τ(t)) = 0 by transforming this equation to the binomial canonical equation. The results obtained essentially improve known results in the literature. On the other hand, the set of comparison principles obtained permits to extend immediately asymptotic criteria from ordinary to delay equations. Research was supported by S.G.A. No.1/003/09.     

A new two‐phase structure‐preserving doubling algorithm for critically singular M‐matrix algebraic Riccati equations

Among numerous iterative methods for solving the minimal nonnegative solution of an M‐matrix algebraic Riccati equation, the structure‐preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) stands out owing to its overall efficiency as well as accuracy. SDA is globally convergent and its convergence is quadratic, except for the critical case for which it converges linearly with the linear rate 1/2. In this paper, we first undertake a delineatory convergence analysis that reveals that the approximations by SDA can be decomposed into two components: the stable component that converges quadratically and the rank‐one component that converges linearly with the linear rate 1/2. Our analysis also shows that as soon as the stable component is fully converged, the rank‐one component can be accurately recovered. We then propose an efficient hybrid method, called the two‐phase SDA, for which the SDA iteration is stopped as soon as it is determined that the stable component is fully converged. Therefore, this two‐phase SDA saves those SDA iterative steps that previously have to have for the rank‐one component to be computed accurately, and thus essentially, it can be regarded as a quadratically convergent method. Global existence and decay of smooth solutions for the 3-D MHD-type equations without magnetic diffusion

We study the large time behavior of a 3-D MHD (magneto-hydrodynamical)-type system without magnetic diffusion introduced by Lin and Zhang (2014). By using the elementary energy method and interpolation technique, we prove the global existence and decay estimate of smooth solution near the equilibrium state (x3, 0).     

A superconvergent nonconforming mixed finite element method for the Navier–Stokes equations

The superconvergence for a nonconforming mixed finite element approximation of the Navier–Stokes equations is analyzed in this article. The velocity field is approximated by the constrained nonconforming rotated Q₁ (CNRQ₁) element, and the pressure is approximated by the piecewise constant functions. Under some regularity assumptions, the superconvergence estimates for both the velocity in broken H¹‐norm and the pressure in L²‐norm are obtained. Cohomology theories in triangulated categories

Let C be a triangulated category with a proper class E of triangles.We prove that there exists an Avramov–Martsinkovsky type exact sequence in C,which connects E-cohomology,E-Tate cohomology and E-Gorenstein cohomology.     

Gradient estimates for porous medium equations under the Ricci flow

A local gradient estimate for positive solutions of porous medium equations on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds under the Ricci flow is derived. Moreover, a global gradient estimate for such equations on compact Riemannian manifolds is also obtained.

On Hahn polynomial expansion of a continuous function of bounded variation

We consider the well-known method of least squares (cf., e.g., [1, p. 217]) on an equidistant grid with N + 1 nodes on the interval [−1, 1]. We investigate the following problem: For which ratio N/n, do we have pointwise convergence of the least square operator LS^N_n : C[−1,[1][→[P_n? To solve this problem we investigate the relation between the Jacobi polynomials P^α,β_k (cf., e.g., [2, p. 216]) and the Hahn polynomials Q_k (·; α, β, N) (cf., e.g., [2, p. 204]). In particular, we present the following result: Let f ∈ {g ∈ C¹[−1, 1] : g′∈ BV [−1, 1]} and let (N_n)_n be a sequence of natural numbers with n⁴/N_n → 0. Multiple positive solutions for discrete nonlocal boundary value problems

In this paper, we investigate a second-order nonlinear difference equation with sign-changing nonlinearity subject to two different sets of nonlocal boundary conditions. The explicit expressions of the associated Green's functions are presented. By using a recently developed fixed point theorem, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of multiple positive solutions of the boundary value problem.
