Light scattering near and from interfaces using evanescent wave and ellipsometric light scattering

The broad range of interface light scattering investigations in recent years shows the power and the versatility of these techniques to address new and open questions in colloid and interface science and the soft condensed matter field. Structural information for polymers, liquid crystals, or colloids close to planar or spherical colloidal interfaces are either captured with long range light scattering resolution, or in a complementary approach by high resolution ellipsometric techniques. Of special interest is the dynamic behavior close to or in interfaces, since it determines material properties and responses to external fields. Due to the broad dynamical range and the high scattering contrast for visible light, interface light scattering is a key to elucidate soft matter interfacial dynamics. This contribution reviews experimental and related theoretical approaches for interface light scattering and further gives an overview of achievements based on such techniques.     

A continuity theorem for Stinespring's dilation

We show a continuity theorem for Stinespring's dilation: two completely positive maps between arbitrary C^∗-algebras are close in cb-norm if and only if we can find corresponding dilations that are close in operator norm. The proof establishes the equivalence of the cb-norm distance and the Bures distance for completely positive maps. We briefly discuss applications to quantum information theory.     

Investigations on the surface properties of ultrafine aerosols by means of a multistep condensation nuclei counter

Conclusions Hydrophobic and tight coatings are recognized by the comparison of the condensation properties of the pure materials of the same electrical mobility diameter. A shift to higher supersaturations necessary for activation is then observed.The consequences drawn for the atmosphere are: Residence time of suspended ultrafine matter is substantially increased, because of the less effective scavenging process.

Phosphoprotein Analysis by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry using On-Probe Tandem Proteolysis and Dephosphorylation

In this investigation, methods based on on-probe enzymatic cleavage matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric (MALDI-TOF-MS) analyses have been developed, allowing the rapid assignment of phosphorylation sites within phosphoproteins. The procedures involved robotic sample deposition of a phosphoprotein, such as intact bovine β-casein, on stainless steel or gold MALDI plates, on-probe proteolysis with trypsin for 10–180?s at 37°C, on-probe dephosphorylation for 1–10?min at 37°C with alkaline phosphatase, followed by differential mass spectrometry with peptide mass mapping. The dephosphorylation conditions were initially optimized using in-solution tryptic digestion of the phosphoprotein performed in the presence of MS-compatible anionic surfactant sodium 3-[(2-methyl-2-undecyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methoxy]-1-propanesulfonate. Two methods of trypsin deactivation were investigated, cooling and quenching by acidification, which resulted in the surfactant either staying intact or becoming cleaved, respectively. Since the surfactant had no detrimental effects on dephosphorylation of phosphopeptides, the acidification and neutralization steps were not included in the final analytical method. A protocol, comprising on-probe tandem, surfactant-aided proteolysis for 3?min followed by on-probe dephosphorylation for 10?min was thus established, allowing the rapid identification of location and sequence of phosphopeptides within a phosphoprotein by these procedures.     

Rheology of interfacial layers

The response of interfacial layers to deformations in size and shape depends on their composition. The corresponding main mechanical quantities are elasticity and viscosity of dilation and shear, respectively. Hence, the interfacial rheology represents a kind of two-dimensional equivalent to the traditional bulk rheology. Due to growing interest in the quantitative understanding of foams and emulsions, more works are dedicated to studies on interfacial rheology. This overview presents the theoretical basis for traditional and recently developed experimental tools and discusses their application to different interfacial systems. While dilational rheology provides information on the composition of mixed interfacial layers, the shear rheology gives answers essentially on structures formed at an interface. The most frequently used methods at present are the oscillating drop and bubble tensiometry methods for dilational deformations and oscillating ring/bicone rheometers for shear deformations.
