Visibility Complexes and the Baues Problem for Triangulations in the Plane

We give a positive answer for the special case of the Generalized Baues Problem which asks whether the complex of triangulations of a point set A in general position in the plane has the homotopy type of a sphere. In the process, we are led to define the visibility complex for a simplicial complex P whose vertices lie in A , and prove that this visibility complex has the same homotopy type as P . The main technique is a variant of deletion-contraction from matroid theory, along with a new method for proving homotopy equivalence of posets which we call the nerve-flag paradigm. Magnetic pigments for recording media

CrO₂ doped with 1--2 wt% Fe³⁺ on Cr⁴⁺ positions is one of the most important materials for magnetic recording in audio, data and video tapes. ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to determine the level of iron doping in newly developed high coercivity CrO₂ particles. It was found that, compared with the conventional preparation process, the new particles contain increased amounts of Fe³⁺ ions in the CrO₂ crystal lattice giving rise to higher magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This is reflected in coercivities of up to over 900 Oe. All samples contain as a secondary iron-containing phase α-(Cr_1-xFe_x)₂O₃, the amount of which is higher in samples of the conventional preparation process than in those of the new BASF process. Details about the mechanism of the development of doped CrO₂ particles in both types of processes were obtained by means of Mössbauer, XRD and wet chemical investigations making possible an optimization of the new BASF process.     

Synthesis, structure and properties of pyrazole type tetrakis compounds

A series of pyrazole type tetrakis compounds has been synthesized by reaction of aromatic or heterocyclic dialdehydes and pyrazolone derivatives. Structure and tautomerism of the products were investigated by spectroscopic methods and X-ray analysis. Several tetrakis compounds form inclusion complexes with solvents like alcohols, ethers, and ketones in a definite ratio via hydrogen bonds.     

A new algorithm for solving the general quadratic programming problem

For the general quadratic programming problem (including an equivalent form of the linear complementarity problem) a new solution method of branch and bound type is proposed. The branching procedure uses a well-known simplicial subdivision and the bound estimation is performed by solving certain linear programs.     

Influence of Surface Contaminations on Cathode Processes of Vacuum Discharges

The influence of surface contaminations on the ignition and maintenance of vacuum discharges is discussed qualitatively. Surface analysis of the electrodes and gas analysis during the discharges demonstrate that fresh electrodes contain always impurities within the upper surface layers, which affect the behaviour of vacuum arcs and vacuum breakdowns. The most effective way for cleaning the surfaces are the discharges themselves, if they burn in UHV. During that cleaning the following variations have been found: Are cathodes spots change from rapid moving ones with small erosion (type 1) to slow ones with strong erosion (type 2). The ignition of nanosecond discharges needs higher field strength and field emission current density. Polishing effects by short discharges (< 5 ns) become more pronounced. Erosion craters in nanosecond discharges increase.     

Diethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl-palladium(II), a case for the study of combination vs. disproportionation products.

Diethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl-palladium(II) is synthesized and its decomposition reactions in absence and presence of methyl acrylate are compared with those of the corresponding nickel and platinum complexes. Depending on the reaction conditions either CC-coupling or disproportionation can be induced.     

Selenium-77 NMR chemical shifts of five-membered selenium and sulphur heterocycles with CSe,CS,and CO groups

This paper reports the ⁷⁷Se NMR chemical shifts of 1,3-dithiole-, 1,3-thiaselenole- and 1,3-diselenole-2-ones, -thiones and -selones, of the corresponding saturated compounds 1,3-diselenolane-2-one, -thione and -selone, and the 1,3-thiaselenolium tetrafluoroborates, either unsubstituted or substituted by morpholino, ethylthio or ethylseleno groups in the 2-position. The ⁷⁷Se chemical shift values of the ring selenium and the C?Se groups are compared with the ¹³C chemical shift values of neighbouring carbon atoms. The relationships between the ⁷⁷Se chemical shifts of the C?Se groups and the wavelengths of their n→* absorption in the UV-visible spectrum are discussed with respect to the significance of the δE term in the contribution of the paramagnetic screening and the electron density distribution.
