Ionic Organic Film Sensor for Determination of Phenolic Compounds

This paper describes the development of a new sensor based on an ionic organic film. The amphiphilic molecule, 4‐[(4‐decyloxyphenyl)‐ethynyl]‐1‐methylpyridinium iodide (10PyI), which has liquid‐crystalline properties, was synthesized and applied in the construction of a GCE/10PyI sensor. Analytical parameters for caffeic acid, repeatability (4.8 %), reproducibility (2.8 %), linearity (two ranges: 9.9×10^?7 to 3.8×10^?5 mol L^?1 and 4.7×10^?5 to 9.9×10^?5 mol L^?1) and detection limits (9.0×10^?7 mol L^?1 and 8.7×10^?6 mol L^?1), were determined. The method was successfully applied in the determination of total phenolic compounds (TPC) in mate herb extracts.     

Study of Blood Porphyrin Spectral Profile for Diagnosis of Chronic Renal Failure

The progression to end-stage renal failure is independent of the initial pathogenic mechanism. Metabolic acidosis is a common consequence of chronic renal failure that results from inadequate ammonium excretion and decreased tubular bicarbonate reabsorption. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is the immediate metabolic precursor of the heme molecule. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the levels of erythrocytes protoporphyrin IX at an animal model during progressive renal disease. A total of 36 eight-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into six groups: Normal, 4 and 8 weeks after 5/6 nephrectomy (NX). Renal function was evaluated by creatinine clearance and plasma creatinine levels. The autofluorescence of erythrocytes porphyrin of healthy and NX rats was analyzed using fluorescence spectroscopy. Emission spectra were obtained by exciting the samples at 405 nm. Significant differences between normal and NX rats autofluorescence shape occurred in the 600–700 nm spectral region. A correlation was observed between emission band intensity at 635 nm and progression of renal disease.     

The derivation of dual extremum and complementary stationary principles in geometrical non-linear shell theory

Summary In non-linear elasticity dual extremum principles can be formulated for some class of elastic deformations, for which uniqueness of the solution is assured. These results are used in the present paper to derive extremal variational principles for geometrical non-linear shells with moderate rotations. Furthermore two complementary variational principles are considered, which are stationary principles without any extremum property. The proposed theorems are valid also for the special cases of linear plates and shells, for the non-linear von Kármán plate theory and for non-linear Donnell-Marguerre type shells.

Übersicht In der nichtlinearen Elastizitätstheorie lassen sich duale Extremalprinzipe für solche elastische Verformungen herleiten, für die Eindeutigkeit der Lösung gewährleistet ist. Diese Resultate werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit benutzt, um für geometrisch-nichtlineare Schalen mit moderaten Rotationen Extremalprinzipe zu erhalten. Darüber hinaus werden zwei komplementäre Variationstheoreme angegeben, die Stationaritätsprinzipe ohne Extremaleigenschaft sind. Die vorgeschlagenen Verfahren gelten auch für die Sonderfälle der linearen Platten- und Schalentheorie, für die nichtlineare von Kármánsche Plattentheorie sowie für die nichtlineare Donnell-Marguerresche Schalentheorie.

     

Electronic control of chiral quaternary center creation in the intramolecular asymmetric heck reaction

The Boehringer-Ingelheim phosphinoimidazoline (BIPI) ligands were applied to the formation of chiral quaternary centers in the asymmetric Heck reaction. Several different substrates were examined in detail, using more than 70 members of this new ligand class. Hammett relationships were determined through systematic variation of the ligand electronics. All substrates showed essentially the same Hammett behavior, where enantioselectivity increased as the ligands were made more electron-deficient. Ligand optimization has led to catalysts which give the highest enantioselectivities reported to date for these difficult systems.     

A sorbent tube for oral malodour monitoring

Volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) and particularly hydrogen sulphide are considered as the predominant gases causing oral malodour. In this paper, a simple alarm sensor has been developed for VSCs determination in mouth air. The device consists of a glass tube packed with a solid sensing phase. The VSCs react with the sensing phase to produce a change in the colour of the sensor visible with a naked eye.Different “reagents” were investigated to develop the sensing phase (neocuproine + Cu(II), bathocuproine + Cu(II), resazurin, 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol and lead acetate), finding the neocuproine + Cu(II) as the best for our purposes. Also, different substrates such as Amberlite XAD-4 and XAD-7 and different trademarks of silica gel were tested as solid supports, being selected the silica gel.A device consisting of a glass tube packed with the sensing phase was optimized and tested with halitosis patients as a rapid illness test and the results compared with those obtained with a commercially available instrument, the Halimeter™, used for the determination of VSCs in mouth air. The results exhibited acceptable agreement between the proposed “qualitative” alarm sensor and a commercially available technique selected as reference, showing the possibility of using this “visual sensor” to control the halitosis and its evolution with an eventual treatment, by the own patient.
