Narrowband filters based on one-barrier crystallike structures

A method of producing narrowband high-selectivity filters based on resonance tunneling in onebarrier crystallike structures is proposed. Characteristics illustrating the efficiency of the method are presented.     

The preparation and structure of 1,4,5,6,7,7-hexachloro-2-endo-ferrocenylhydroxymethyl-3-endo-hydroxymethyl-5-norbornene

The crystal structure of a novel ferrocene derivative with potential flame-retardant/smoke-suppressant activity, 1,4,5,6,7,7-hexachloro-2-endo-ferrocenyl-hydroxymethyl-3-endo-hydroxymethyl-5-norbornene, has been determined. Some of the carbon–carbon bonds within the chlorendic residue are unusually long, and there is no interaction between the hydroxyl groups and the iron atom. There is evidence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the two hydroxyl groups.     

Electrodeposition of molybdenum oxide and its structural characteristics

The cathodic processes in electroplating of compact molybdenum oxide coatings onto supports made of 12Cr18Ni9Ti steel and aluminum are considered along with the physicochemical characteristics determining their service properties.     

Photocrosslinked poly(vinylbenzophenone)‐core micelles via mild Friedel–Crafts benzoylation of polystyrene amphiphiles

Photocrosslinkable poly(vinylbenzophenone)‐containing polymers were synthesized via a one‐step, Friedel–Crafts benzoylation of polystyrene‐containing starting materials [including polystyrene, polystyrene‐block‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate), polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide), polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate), and polystyrene‐block‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate)] with benzoyl trifluoromethanesulfonate as a benzoylation reagent. The use of this mild reagent (which required no added Lewis acid) permitted polymers with well‐defined compositions and narrow molecular weight distributions to be synthesized. Micelles formed from one of these benzoylated polymers, [polystyrene_0.25‐co‐poly(vinylbenzophenone)_0.75]₁₁₅‐block‐poly(acrylic acid)₁₄, were then fixed by the irradiation of the micelle cores with UV light. As the irradiation time was increased, the pendent benzophenone groups crosslinked with other chains in the glassy micelle cores. Dynamic light scattering, spectrofluorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were all used to verify the progress of the crosslinking reaction. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Metallocene copolymers of propene and 1‐hexene: The influence of the comonomer content and thermal history on the structure and mechanical properties

The relationships between the structure and properties have been established for copolymers of propylene and 1‐hexene synthesized with an isotactic metallocene catalyst system. The most important factor affecting the structure and properties of these copolymers is the comonomer content. The thermal treatment, that is, the rate of cooling from the melt, is also important. These factors affect the thermal properties, the degree of crystallinity, and therefore the structural parameters and the viscoelastic behavior. A slow cooling from the melt favors the formation of the γ phase instead of the α modification. Regarding the viscoelastic behavior, the β relaxation, associated with the glass‐transition temperature, is shifted to lower temperatures and its intensity is increased as the 1‐hexene content raises. The microhardness values are correlated with those of the storage modulus deduced from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis curves, and good linear relations have been obtained between these parameters. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rheology,morphology, and estimation of the interfacial tension of binary blends based on low‐density polyethylene/poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and high‐density polyethylene/poly(trimethylene terephthalate) [retracted article]

It has come to our attention that this article, “Rheology, Morphology, and Estimation of the Interfacial Tension of Binary Blends Based on Low‐Density Polyethylene/Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and High‐Density Polyethylene/Poly(trimethylene terephthalate)” by A. A. Shokri and S. E. Zamani was previously published under the title, “Rheology, Morphology and Estimation of Interfacial Tension of LDPE/EVA and HDPE/EVA Blends” by H. A. Khonakdar, S. H. Jafari, A. Yavari, A. Asadinezhad, U. Wagenknecht, in Polymer Bulletin 54, 75–84 (2005), . We have retracted the article, and offer our apologies to the authors of the original paper.     

Gold ultra-microelectrode arrays: application to the steady-state voltammetry of hydroxide ion in aqueous solution.

Gold ultra-microelectrode arrays are used to explore the electrochemical oxidation of hydroxide ions and are shown to be analytical useful. Two types of ultra-microelectrode arrays are used; the first consist of 256 individual electrodes of 5 microm in radius, 170 of which are electrochemically active in a cubic arrangement which are separated from their nearest neighbour by a distance of 100 microm. The second array compromises 2597 electrodes of 2.5 microm in radius and of which 1550 of which are electrochemically active in a hexagonal arrangement separated by the nearest neighbour by 55 microm. Well defined voltammetric waves are found with peak currents proportional to the concentration of hydroxide ions in the range 50 microM to 1 mM. Detection limits of 20 microM using the 170 ultra-microelectrode and 10 microM with the 1550 ultra-microelectrode array are shown to be possible but with a higher sensitivity of 4 mA M(-1) observed using the 1550 ultra-microelectrode array compared to 1.2 mA M(-1) with the 170 ultra-microelectrode array.     

Synthesis and characterization of ciprofloxacin compounds with cadmium(II) and mercury(II) chlorides

Five new compounds of ciprofloxacin (CfH = C₁₇H₁₈FN₃O₃) with cadmium(II) and mercury(II) chlorides were synthesized. The compounds were characterized by chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, pH-metric titration, UV spectroscopy, and thermal analysis.     

Chaotic buffering and its mathematical models

We propose a general idea of obtaining different chains of coupled oscillators with chaotic buffering. As examples, we consider chains of diffusively coupled generalized cubic Schrödinger equations and nonlinear telegraph equations. We also give examples of systems that have an infinite-dimensional chaotic attractor.
