An investigation of the role of the disparate redox states of the tetrathiafulvalene unit in modulating hydrogen bonding interactions in solution

We have investigated the electrochemically controlled hydrogen bonding interactions between tetrathiafulvalene host 3 and guests 4 or 5. Stabilisation of the 3⁺ state is dependent upon the nature of the guest species, whereas both guests prevent precipitation of the electrochemically generated 3²⁺ species at the working electrode via hydrogen bonded molecular recognition processes.     

Total synthesis of (+)-belactosin A

A concise first total synthesis of the antitumour antibiotic belactosin A is reported, involving coupling of beta-lactone carboxylic acid 3 with N-Ala-aminocyclopropyl alanine 11.     

Rotational relaxation in the Ar—N2 system

The first (Z⁽¹⁾) and second (Z⁽²⁾) approximations to the rotational number of the Ar—N₂ system are compared for a range of temperatures. Although Z⁽¹⁾ and Z⁽²⁾ differ by a significant amount their difference remains nearly constant as a function of temperature. The effects of mass and potential parameter variations on the rotational relaxation time are also studied. When the mass of the incoming atom is decreased Z⁽²⁾ goes through a minimum while Z⁽¹⁾ steadily increases.     

Novel routes to 1-aryl-1,4-dihydro-3(2H)-isoquinolinones and 2-substituted or 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans by intramolecular cyclizations

N-(α-Benzotriazolylalkyl)arylacetamides, readily available from an arylacetamide, an aldehyde and benzotriazole, undergo intramolecular cyclization under acidic conditions to give 1-aryl-1,4-dihydro-3(2H)-isoquinolinones in good to excellent yields. Similarly, 2-(benzotriazol-1-yl)-2-(o-hydroxyphenyl)ethanols, obtained by lithiation of 2-(benzotriazol-1-ylmethyl)phenols followed by quenching with aldehydes or ketones, eliminate a molecule of water and a molecule of benzotriazole yielding 2-substituted and 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans.     

Molecular emission cavity analysis : Part VII. The determination of cadmium

Cadmium salts give an intense cadmium atomic emission in the MECA cavity in a hydrogen-nitrogen-air flame. When a carbon or stainless steel cavity is used, 10–120 ng of cadmium in 5-μl samples can be determined. In the presence of sulphuric acid, anionic interferences are removed. Of the cations, only Fe(III), Cr(III), Mg and Sn(II) interfere seriously.     

Energetics of protein-cyclodextrin interactions

The energetics of interaction of a range of cyclodextrins with folded and unfolded proteins has been examined by sensitive microcalorimetry techniques. Weak interaction with exposed amino acid residues promotes unfolding and dissociation of proteins. The possibility that such interactions may facilitate the use of cyclodextrins as chaperone-mimics in the refolding of denatured protein has been explored with the enzyme phosphoglycerate kinase. Up to 40% regain of activity can be achieved in some cases.     

A Product Formed from Glycylglycine in the Presence of Vanadate and Hydrogen Peroxide: The (Glycylde-N-hydroglycinato-kappa(3)N(2),N(N)(),O(1))oxoperoxovanadate(V) Anion

A crystalline glycylglycine complex of monoperoxovanadate has been obtained and its X-ray structure determined. The coordination is pentagonal bipyramidal with the peroxo group and a tridentate glycylglycine occupying the equatorial positions. The axial positions of the anion are occupied by the oxo ligand and by one oxygen of the peroxo group of the adjacent anion. The latter interaction establishes the seventh bond and produces a dimeric structure in the crystalline material. NMR studies of its dissolution in water combined with previously reported results from equilibrium measurements show that the dimer dissociates in water to the monomeric precursor. It is proposed that this monomer corresponds to the complex responsible for the inhibition of the vanadium-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by glycylglycine. Structures of two ketals derived from a pentacyclic cage diketone

The structure of a compound derived from a symmetrical cage diketone in which one of the ketone C=O groups has been converted into a ketal is reported. An investigation into reasons for the selective functionalization resulted in the isolation of acis, cisoid, cis linear triquinane derivative in which both ketones are converted to ketals that share a transannular oxygen atom.
