A series of symmetrical dimers consisting of salicylaldimine moieties connected by flexible alkylene central spacer via ether linkages has been synthesized. In order to validate the empirical rule suggested by Date et al. to account for the smectic behaviour of such dimers, the chain length of the terminal alkoxy chain has been kept constant (C8) while the number of methylene units in the central spacer was varied from C3 to C11. Another aim of the present investigation was to understand structure-property relationship in these dimers in which the salicylaldimine mesogenic segment has been used for the first time in dimers. The mesomorphic behaviour of these dimers was evaluated using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and the structure of some of the mesophases has been further investigated with the help of X-ray diffraction. Our studies reveal that the dimers consisting of 3 to 8 methylene units in the flexible spacer show only smectic (smectic C and smectic A) phases. For the dimers containing 4, 6 and 8 methylene units in the central spacer, a unique filament growth pattern has been observed in the smectic A phase while cooling from the isotropic phase. The dimers containing of C9 to C11 methylene groups exhibit the nematic phase in addition to smectic modifications. This observation indicates that when the terminal chains are shorter than the spacer, the tendency to form smectic phases is not fully extinguished but is perhaps reduced. 相似文献

This article studies some geometrical aspects of the semidefinite linear complementarity problem (SDLCP), which can be viewed as a generalization of the well-known linear complementarity problem (LCP). SDLCP is a special case of a complementarity problem over a closed convex cone, where the cone considered is the closed convex cone of positive semidefinite matrices. It arises naturally in the unified formulation of a pair of primal-dual semidefinite programming problems. In this article, we introduce the notion of complementary cones in the semidefinite setting using the faces of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and show that unlike complementary cones induced by an LCP, semidefinite complementary cones need not be closed. However, under R0-property of the linear transformation, closedness of all the semidefinite complementary cones induced by L is ensured. We also introduce the notion of a principal subtransformation with respect to a face of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and show that for a self-adjoint linear transformation, strict copositivity is equivalent to strict semimonotonicity of each principal subtransformation. A graphite electrode modified with cobalt hexacyanoferrate by mechanical immobilization was used for amperometric determination of hydrazine. The modified electrode exhibits good catalytic activity for the oxidation of hydrazine at a reduced overpotential with remarkable sensitivity. The modified electrode showed a linear response for hydrazine in the concentration range of 2.0 × 10–5 to 2.8 × 10–4 M. The detection limit was 9.8 × 10–6 M (S/N = 3). We have made the XAFS measurements at the Cr–K-edge on natural Indian ruby single crystals (corundum) and its two irradiated samples with fluence 1×1012 Ni6+ and 5×1012 Ni6+ ions/cm2. Irradiated samples show interesting changes in their physical appearance. XANES measurements show progressive decrease in Δoct value on increase of Ni fluence in irradiated samples. EXAFS measurements on these samples show decrease in Cr–O distance on increase of Ni fluence. Lowering of Δoct value is correlated with the increase of Cr–O distance. 相似文献

CR-39 is a polycarbonate widely used as SSNTD for recording nuclear charged particles and in other applications. Latent ion tracks produced in the polymers due to the damage produced by the passage of Swift Heavy Ions contain amorphous material with highest degree of disorder, changing the free volume properties which have strong correlation with the macroscopic properties of the material. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) provides direct information about the dimension, content and hole size distribution of free volume in polymers. The effect of irradiation of 40Ar (14.9 MeV/n) ions on CR-39 polycarbonate by Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) is reported here. PALS provides a non-destructive and non-interfering probe, having high detection efficiency for free volume hole properties. From o-Ps lifetime mean free volume hole radius and average free volume of the micro-voids have been calculated. PAL measurement shows an increase in free volume on irradiation. 相似文献
