Substituted m-phenylene bridges as strong ferromagnetic couplers for Cu(II)-bridge-Cu(II) magnetic interactions: new perspectives

Based on a combined theoretical-experimental study, we propose that substituted m-phenylene ligands (m-N-Phi-N) can act as tuneable strong ferromagnetic couplers connecting Cu(II) ions; a new complex presenting that bridge with J close to +15 cm(-1) has been suggested and synthesized.     

Bianchi type-V perfect fluid models

A study of the nontilted diagonal Bianchi type-V perfect fluid models is undertaken in the nonlocally rotationally symmetric case. It is shown that in such a model, the singularity is necessarily velocity dominated and the upper bound for the ratio of the shear to the expansion is 1/3. A class of such exact models is also presented; the structure of the singularity and the effect of the anisotropy on the scale are discussed. Lastly, an attempt is made to solve exactly the equations of motion for the coordinates of the null geodesics.     

Acidic peroxo salts. A new class of initiators for vinyl polymerization. I. Kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by potassium monopersulfate catalyzed by Ag(I)

The kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by KHSO₅ and catalyzed by Ag(I) have been investigated in an aqueous medium over the temperature range of 35–50°C. The rates of polymerization R_p have been calculated and studied with respect to monomer and initiator. The catalytic activity of various metal ions on the initiator has been determined from a comparison of R_p values. The effects of monomer, catalyst, neutral salts, various amines, and inhibitor (hydroquinone) on the initial rate as well as maximum conversion have been studied. From the kinetics results a suitable reaction scheme has been proposed.     

Biotechnological storage and utilization of entrapped solar energy

Our laboratory has recently developed a device employing immobilized F₀F₁ adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) that allows synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from adenosine 5′-diphosphate and inorganic phosphate using solar energy. We present estimates of total solar energy received by Earth’s land area and demonstrate that its efficient capture may allow conversion of solar energy and storage into bonds of biochemicals using devices harboring either immobilized ATPase or NADH dehydrogenase. Capture and storage of solar energy into biochemicals may also enable fixation of CO₂ emanating from polluting units. The cofactors ATP and NADH synthesized using solar energy could be used for regeneration of acceptor d-ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate from 3-phosphoglycerate formed during CO₂ fixation.     

Studies on metal — protein interactions: Inter-comparison among various approaches

Binding ability of mercury, thallium, lead and bismuth with Erythrina variegata seed protein have been investigated using tracer packet technique. Due to the lack of standard methods, inter-comparisons have been made among three different approaches, like trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitation, isoelectric precipitation and dialysis of protein after incubation with the metals. Good agreement was observed for all the cases except that of lead.     

Kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the Mn3+-thioacetamide redox system

Kinetics of the polymerization of acrylonitrile has been investigated in aqueous sulfuric acid in a temperature range of 25–45°C. The rate of polymerization (R_p) and the rate of managanic ion disappearance, etc., have been measured. The effect of the various additives, such as water-miscible organic solvents, neutral electrolytes, complexing agents, and surfactants, on the rate has been thoroughly studied. A mechanism that involves the initial complex formation between the thiol form of the thioamide and Mn³⁺, whose decomposition yields the initiating free radical with the polymer chain terminated by mutual combination of growing radicals, has been suggested.     

Studies in sesquiterpenes—LVI: Isolongifolene (part 7): mechanism of rearrangement of longifolene to isolongifolene—II

The question of possible neutral intermediates which may lie on the reaction pathway in going from longifolene to isolongifolene has been investigated using BF₃·Et₂O-AcOD and D₃PO₄-dioxane, as reagents. It has been found that longicyclene is not an obligatory intermediate. The mode of cleavage of cyclopropane ring in longicyclene has been investigated.
