Optimization of resolution in micellar electrokinetic chromatography

A comparison of separations conducted in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and SDS modified with Brij 35 indicates that selectivity, in Micellar Electrokinetic Chromatography (MEKC), is governed by the composition of the micellar phase. Beyond selectivity optimization, resolution may be improved by increasing efficiency or decreasing electroosmotic flow. Of these approaches, increasing capillary length (to improve efficiency) should be a more time effective means of improving separation.     

Enamine chemistry-XXVI: The [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of 3-amino-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-prop-2-ene-1-thione with electrophilic olefins and acetylenes

Enamino-thiones 1 prepared from the corresponding enaminones by thiation with Lawesson's Reagent, were allowed to react with 2-chloroacrylonitrile and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate giving dihydro-2$\text{H}$-thiopyrans, 2, and 4$\text{H}$-thipyrans, 3, respectively. The reaction of 1a with ethyl propiolate at room temperature afforded 4$\text{H}$-thipyrans, 4a, which on standing rearranged to 2$\text{H}$-thiopyran, 5a(1, 3 amide shift). The reaction of 1b with ethyl propiolate produced 4b and 5b. Some of the ¹³C NMR data are reported.     

Physical processes in azobenzene polymers on irradiation with polarized light

Azobenzenes can serve as model compounds for the study of transcis isomerization in more complex molecules. We have performed time-resolved spectroscopy in solutions containing free azobenzene chromophores and diols with a view to obtaining the energy levels and lifetimes of the excited states. A transition route based on experimental results for the theoretically calculated energy level scheme is proposed. Physical observations of surface relief in thin films of azobenzene polymers when irradiated with polarized light are reported. These include two beam polarization holographic observations and single beam transmission measurements through a mask, followed by atomic force microscope and profiler investigations. It is concluded that none of the prevalent theories can explain all the observed facts.
