Generating unexpected spin echoes in dipolar solids with pi pulses

NMR spin echo measurements of 13C in C60, 89Y in Y2O3, and 29Si in silicon are shown to defy conventional expectations when more than one pi pulse is used. Multiple pi-pulse echo trains may either freeze out or accelerate the decay of the signal, depending on the pi-pulse phase. Average Hamiltonian theory, combined with exact quantum calculations, reveals an intrinsic cause for these coherent phenomena: the dipolar coupling has a many-body effect during any real, finite pulse.     

Conformational characteristics of poly(vinylpyrrolidone). solvent-dependence of the chain dimensions

Conformational energies as function of rotational angles over two consecutive skeletal bonds for both meso and racemic diads of poly(Nvinyl-2-pyrrolidone) have been computed. The results of these calculations were used to formulate a statistical model that was then employed to calculate the unperturbed dimensions of this polymer. The conformational energies are sensitive to the Coulombic interactions, which are governed by the dielectric constant, of the solvent, and to the size of the solvent molecules. Consequently, the calculated values of the polymeric chain dimensions are strongly dependent on the nature of the solvent, as it was experimentally found before.     

Current status of biodiesel development in Brazil

In recent years, the concept of producing biodiesel from renewable lipid sources has regained international attention. In Brazil, a national program was launched in 2002 to evaluate the technical, economic, and environmental competitiveness of biodiesel in relation to the commercially available diesel oil. Several research projects were initiated nationwide to investigate and/or optimize biodiesel production from renewable lipid sources and ethanol derived from sugarcane (ethyl esters). Once implemented, this program will not only decrease our dependence on petroleum derivatives but also create new market opportunities for agribusiness, opening new jobs in the countryside, improving the sustainability of our energy matrix, and helping the Brazilian government to support important actions against poverty. This article discusses the efforts to develop the Brazilian biodiesel program in the context of technical specifications as well as potential oilseed sources.     

Positron trapping in deformed Gd

Positron lifetime and Doppler broadening measurements have been used to study the annealing behaviour of deformed Gd between 290 and 700 K. The observed recovery stage at about 370 K is attributed to dislocations annealing.     

Differential operators in terms of Clebsch-Gordon (C-G) coefficients and the wave equation of massless tensor fields

The quantum theory of angular momentum affords a treatment of tensors and vectors in a spherical basis. By using this theory we define the tensor differential operators: divergence, curl and gradient which act on a tensor of any rank, in terms of C-G coefficients. With these definitions we obtain a matrix representation and useful properties for those operators. An interesting application of this formalism is to find the wave equation of a tensor of any rank in a linear theory. This provides a new common way to look at the wave equations associated with both Maxwell's equations and the Maxwell-like equations for the linearized Weyl curvature tensor in gravitoelectromagnetism describing gravitational radiation on a Minkowski spacetime background.     

Epidemiological Study of Voice Disorders Among Teaching Professionals of La Rioja, Spain

The purpose of the present study was to calculate the prevalence and incidence of voice disorders among teaching staff and find out the associated occupational risk factors. A case-control study was performed with 905 teachers, 579 cases and 326 controls; 492 were randomly selected and 413 volunteered. All teachers were asked to fill out a standard questionnaire. Next, a complete laryngeal exam was performed including a general ear, nose, and throat evaluation and videolaryngostroboscopy. The prevalence of voice disorders among teaching staff was 57%. The most prevalent lesions were vocal overstrain (18%), nodular lesions (14%), and hyperfunctional dysphonia (8%). The incidence rate was 3.87 new cases per year per 1000 teachers. Women had organic lesions three times more than men (odds ratio [OR]: 3.52, confidence interval [CI]: 2.04-6.09). However, men had chronic laryngitis three times more than women (OR: 2.93, CI: 1.50-5.71) and functional dysphonia nearly twice more than women (OR: 1.81, CI: 1.21-2.69). We find a significant risk of suffering voice disorders in teachers who smoke daily (OR: 2.31, CI: 1.58-3.37) and who drink several cups of coffee or tea (OR: 1.87, CI: 1.36-2.56). It is advisable to carry out an annual evaluation of all teaching staff on account of the high prevalence of voice disorders among them.

[Cp*Rh(κ³N,N′,P- L )][SbF₆] (Cp*=C₅Me₅), bearing a guanidine-derived phosphano ligand L , behaves as a “dormant” frustrated Lewis pair and activates H₂ and H₂O in a reversible manner. When D₂O is employed, a facile H/D exchange at the Cp* ring takes place through sequential C(sp³)−H bond activation.
