Calorimetry of the Reactions of Hydrolysates of Chromed Shavings with Aldehydes

Hydrolysates from chromed leather waste obtained in powdered form on an industrial scale by using biotechnical methods were analysed by TG an DSC techniques. Besides about 9% (mass/mass) of moisture, around 1% (mass/mass) of cyclohexylamine was found in the pulverized hydrolysates. Calorimetric measurement of the reaction heats of the reactions of the hydrolysates with commercially available aldehydes indicates that their reactivity decreases in the sequenceglutardialdehyde>>methylglyoxal≈acetaldehyde>>glyoxal>formaldehyde. Synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of new 16-methyl pregnane derivatives

The pharmacological activity of several new pregnane derivatives 15-19 were determined on gonadectomized male hamster flank organs, seminal vesicles and in vitro conversion of testosterone (T) to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) as 5alpha-reductase inhibitors. Steroids 15-19 decreased the diameter of the pigmented spot in the flank organs as compared to the T treated animals; in this model, steroids 16 and 19 showed a higher activity than the commercially available finasteride 3. Injection of T increased the weight of the seminal vesicles. Compounds 15-19 when injected together with T decreased the weight of the seminal vesicles thus showing an antiandrogenic effect. The trienone 19 exhibited a considerably higher activity than finasteride. Steroids 15-19 inhibited the in vitro metabolism of [3H]T to [3H]DHT in seminal vesicles homogenates of gonadectomized male hamsters. Compounds 18 and 19 showed a much higher antiandrogenic effect than finasteride. This enhancement of the biological activity could probably be attributed to the coplanarity of the steroidal skeleton as previously observed by our group. The high antiandrogenic activity of the epoxy compound 16 is probably the result of the ring opening of the oxiran ring with the nucleophilic part of the enzyme 5alpha-reductase thus leading to a stable adduct with concomitant deactivation of this enzyme.     

Tension trapping of carbonyl ylides facilitated by a change in polymer backbone

Epoxidized polybutadiene and epoxidized polynorbornene were subjected to pulsed ultrasound in the presence of small molecules capable of being trapped by carbonyl ylides. When epoxidized polybutadiene was sonicated, there was no observable small molecule addition to the polymer. Concurrently, no appreciable isomerization (cis to trans epoxide) was observed, indicating that the epoxide rings along the backbone are not mechanically active under the experimental conditions employed. In contrast, when epoxidized polynorbornene was subjected to the same conditions, both addition of ylide trapping reagents and net isomerization of cis to trans epoxide were observed. The results demonstrate the mechanical activity of epoxides, show that mechanophore activity is determined not only by the functional group but also the polymer backbone in which it is embedded, and facilitate a characterization of the reactivity of the ring-opened dialkyl epoxide.     

On the computation of molecular electronic affinities

Using a multireferent MBPT method (CIPSI) the electronic affinity (EA) of F, CN and HCC is computed. Results show how UMP2 gives unbalanced truncation of the MP series, while ROMP2 has the correct (balanced) behaviour. The good agreement with the experimental EA found for some compounds is accidental and associated to an error compensation. The good agreement with the experimental data found for the ROMP2 and CIPSI EAs is analysed.This paper was presented at the International Conference on The Impact of Supercomputers on Chemistry, held at the University of London, London, UK, 13–16 April 1987     

Tungsten(VI)-gluconic acid complexes: Polarimetric and13C-N.m.r. Studies in an excess of tungsten(VI)

Summary A polarimetric study of the tungsten (VI)-gluconic acid system in an excess of metal reveals the formation of four stable complexes: two monomers with 1 : 2 and 2: 1 stoichiometries and two dimers of 2:2 composition. The pH ranges of these species, the amount of acid equivalents their formation requires, and their conditional stability constants have also been calculated.The probable coordination of the organic ligand to the metallic centre in solutions containing different metal : ligand ratios has been investigated by¹³C-n.m.r. spectroscopy. The results confirm the formation of different complexes depending on the reagent which is in excess. The behaviour of the system when the metal is in excess is related to that of other polyhydroxylic ligands such as mannitol and sorbitol.     

Tungsten-mannitol and sorbitol complexes: Structural characterization by IR and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Polarimetric and spectrophotometric studies of the mannitol-tungsten(IV) system show the formation of three table complexes. Their stoichiometries, degrees of condensation and interconversion equilibria have been studied. The structure of these compounds has been investigated by ¹³C NMR spectroscopy in aqueous solution and by IR spectroscopy in the solid state for the two species stable at pH < 7.     

Study of the mixed-metal lanthanummagnesium-purpurin complex: spectrophotometric determination of yttrium and lanthanides

Mixtures of La(III) and Mg(II) form with purpurin (P; 1,2,4-trihydroxyanthraquinone) the mixed-metal complex LaMg₂P₅, which is extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone at pH 7.5. The molar absorptivity of the complex is 6.1 × 10⁴ l.mole⁻¹.cm⁻¹ at 570 nm and its conditional extraction constant 5 × 10¹³ l⁴.mole⁻⁴. Similar complexes have been found to be formed with yttrium, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium. The use of these complexes for the spectrophotometric determination of yttrium and lanthanides up to 15 μg has been investigated.     

Creating a Model of Acceptance: Preservice Teachers Interact With Non‐English‐Speaking Latino Parents Using Culturally Relevant Mathematics and Science Activities at Family Learning Events

The following describes a culturally relevant mathematics and science content program implemented by preservice teachers (PSTs) at Family Math/Science Learning Events (FM/SLEs) conducted through two different university programs in south Texas. These experiences are required course activities designed to inform PSTs of the importance of interacting with Latino families' culture and language in after school settings. Data were collected from elementary PSTs attending FMLEs and include interactions recorded during the FMLE and interviews with Latino non‐English‐speaking parents after the event. Anecdotal data were also included from parents' interviews collected during culturally relevant Family Science Learning Events. Researchers investigated the following questions: (1) what did Latino parents and PSTs report learning from the FMLE and, (2) how do perceptions toward Latino parents change when PSTs are given the opportunity to interact with and interview Latino parents? Results show that PSTs perceptions of Latino parents can be changed through these events. Implications for teacher preparation programs include providing PSTs with opportunities for participation in FM/SLEs that incorporate planning and teaching culturally relevant math and science activities. The following model of acceptance requires PSTs to identify and reconstruct misconceptions and perceptions of parents, especially non‐English‐speaking Latino parents.
