Experimental study and performance evaluation of various cook stove models based on energy and exergy analysis

This article presents the experimental study and comparative performance evaluation of four types of cook stoves using energy and exergy analysis. Analysis of four different types of cook stove models viz. Envirofit, Mangla, Harsha and Vikram were selected and the water boiling test has been carried out. The suitable biomass available from the local market was prepared in the proper size as described in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and has been used as the fuel for cook stove in this experimental study. The aluminium pots of proper capacity as per BIS standard have been used for different cook stoves. The data from the experiments was collected and evaluated for the energy and exergy efficiencies for different models. Based on the data analysis it is found that the exergy efficiency is much lower than that of the energy efficiency for all the four models. It is also found that the both the efficiencies of Envirofit model are found to be higher than those of other models studied here.     

Two new eudesmane derivatives from Verbesina virginica

<正>Two new eudesmane derivatives were isolated from the leaves and flowers of Verbesina virginica,along with the known 6-O-β-E -p-coumaroyl-4α-hydroxyeudesmane(1).Their structures were determined as 6-O-β-Z-p-coumaroyl-4α-hydroxyeudesmane(2) and 6-O-α-E-p-coumaroyl-1β-4α-dihydroxyeudesmane(3) by spectroscopic methods.     

Lanthanum Trifluoromethane-sulfonate‐Catalyzed Facile Synthesis of Per‐O‐acetylated Sugars and Their One‐Pot Conversion to S‐Aryl and O‐Alkyl/Aryl Glycosides†

Lanthanum trifluoromethanesulfonate‐catalyzed solvent‐free per‐O‐acetylation with stoichiometric acetic anhydride proceeds in high yield (95%–99%) to afford exclusively pyranose products as anomeric mixtures. Subsequent anomeric substitution employing borontrifluoride etherate and thiols or alcohols furnished the corresponding 1,2‐trans‐linked thioglycosides and O‐glycosides, respectively, in good to excellent overall yield (75%–85%). Alternatively, reaction of free sugars in neat alcohol employing the same catalyst at elevated temperature gives the corresponding 1,2‐cis‐linked O‐glycosides (along with 1,2‐trans‐linked glycosides as minor product) in good yield (73%–80%). Anomeric mixtures of compounds thus produced were characterized as their per‐O‐acetylated derivatives.      

Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis of 316-L Stainless Steel

Prompt gamma-rays from thermal neutron capture reaction have been used to measure the concentrations of the main constituents namely Fe, Ni and Cr in 316-L stainless steel using recently established prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) facility at Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH). High resolution, high purity germanium detector with 40% relative efficiency was employed for the gamma-ray spectroscopy of the samples. The interference-free full energy gamma-ray peaks of the elements of interests were selected in the high energy low background region (5.0–9.0 MeV). The efficiency calibration of the detector was performed using ultra pure standards of chromium and chlorine obtained respectively from Merck and Alpha Inorganics. This paper describes, in addition, the salient features as well as the background of establishing PGNAA facility at the Institute.     

Phytochemical studies on the seed extract of Piper nigrum Linn

The petroleum ether extract of dried ground seeds of Piper nigrum Linn. and some column fractions of this extract were subjected to GC and GC-MS analysis, resulting in the identification of fourteen compounds (1-14) by using NIST Mass spectral search program 1998 and the Kovat's retention indices. Ten of the compounds (1, 2, 4-12) are reported for the first time from this plant. All the fractions showed insecticidal activity against the fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti and against the fourth instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi Liston, determined by the WHO method.     

Ginsenoside Rb1 Mitigates Escherichia coli Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Endometritis through TLR4-Mediated NF-κB Pathway

Endometritis is the inflammatory response of the endometrial lining of the uterus and is associated with low conception rates, early embryonic mortality, and prolonged inter-calving intervals, and thus poses huge economic losses to the dairy industry worldwide. Ginsenoside Rb1 (GnRb1) is a natural compound obtained from the roots of Panax ginseng, having several pharmacological and biological properties. However, the anti-inflammatory properties of GnRb1 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged endometritis through the TLR4-mediated NF-κB signaling pathway has not yet been researched. This study was planned to evaluate the mechanisms of how GnRb1 rescues LPS-induced endometritis. In the present research, histopathological findings revealed that GnRb1 ameliorated LPS-triggered uterine injury. The ELISA and RT-qPCR assay findings indicated that GnRb1 suppressed the expression level of pro-inflammatory molecules (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) and boosted the level of anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokine. Furthermore, the molecular study suggested that GnRb1 attenuated TLR4-mediated NF-κB signaling. The results demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of GnRb1 in the mouse model of LPS-triggered endometritis via the inhibition of the TLR4-associated NF-κB pathway. Taken together, this study provides a baseline for the protective effect of GnRb1 to treat endometritis in both humans and animals.     

Anodic a.c. polarography of methylthymol blue

The anodic a.c. polarographic properties of methylthymol blue (MTB) were investigated in the supporting electrolyte of potassium nitrate containing buffer. The difference in the peak potentials of MTB and EDTA is a good measure of the difference in the stabilities of both chelates. The stability constant of mercury(II)-MTB complex was successfully determined on the basis of that reported for the mercury(II)-EDTA complex.
