Reductive Coupling of Carbonyl Compounds to Pinacols with Zinc in THF-Saturated Aqueous Ammonium Chloride

Summary.  In the presence of metallic zinc, aldehydes and ketones experience reductive coupling in tetrahydrofuran-saturated aqueous ammonium chloride (5:3) to afford the corresponding pinacols in moderate to high yields. Received October 23, 2000. Accepted (revised) December 12, 2000     

Novel Synthesis of (+/−)-cis-4-Amino-2-cyclopentene-1-methanol,a Key Intermediate in the Preparation of Carbocyclic 2′,3′-Didehydro-2′,3′-dideoxy Nucleosides

Abstract

Novel synthetic routes directed toward the preparation of (+/?)-cis -4-amino-2-cyclopentene-1-methanol are described. The routes investigated involve azide openings of chiral and non-chiral cyclopentyl epoxides.     

Thermodynamic simulation of performance of a dual cycle with stroke length and volumetric efficiency

This article presents finite-time thermodynamics analysis of an irreversible air standard dual cycle. An irreversible dual cycle model which is more close to practice is established. In this model, the effects of stroke length and volume efficiency by considering the nonlinear relation between the specific heats of working fluid and its temperature, the frictional loss, the internal irreversibility, and heat transfer loss are analyzed. The results show that if compression ratio is less than certain value, the power output increases with increasing stroke length, while if compression ratio exceeds certain value, the power output first increases and then starts to decrease with increasing stroke length. With further increase in compression ratio, the increase of stroke length results in decreasing the power output. The results also show that, throughout the compression ratio range, the power output increases with the increasing volumetric efficiency. The results obtained in this study are of importance to provide good guidance for performance evaluation and improvement of practical internal combustion engines.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Quinoxalines,Benzoxazines, and Benzothiazines Under Solvent-Free Conditions

The addition of dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylate to o-phenylenediamine, o-aminophenol, and o-aminothiophenol under microwave irradiation in solventless system rapidly afforded quinoxaline, benzoxazine, and benzothiazine derivatives, respectively.     

Development of a Bonner sphere spectrometer with emphasis on decreasing the contribution of scattering by using a new designed shadow cone

In this study, the Bonner sphere spectrometer (BSS) used for measurement of neutron spectra based a BF₃ long counter. The most important problem for this system was a high count of scattered neutrons. This spectrometer was established by designed a new shadow cone with a smaller length and improved attenuation coefficient. Because of shortening the length of the shadow cone, distance of source and center of the sphere was decreased. Furthermore, external part of the thermal detector was covered with a suitable layer to reduce the contribution count of scattering neutrons. Experimental results show that BSS system with BF₃ long cylindrical counter, applying the proper developments, can be used in neutron fluence spectrometry.
