Extension of the A1Σ+-X1Σ+ system of7LiH near the dissociation limit

The absorption spectra of⁷LiH have been photographed in the 3,500?2,900 Å region using the second order of a 3.4 M Ebert spectrograph. Observations comprise previously observedA ¹ Σ ⁺-X ¹ Σ ⁺ transitions and several new vibrational bands of this system near the ionisation limit. Rotational and vibrational analysis of these bands (16≦V′≦20) have been carried out and the rotational constants for the upper states have been determined.     

Finite-temperature quasicontinuum: molecular dynamics without all the atoms

Using a combination of statistical mechanics and finite-element interpolation, we develop a coarse-grained (CG) alternative to molecular dynamics (MD) for crystalline solids at constant temperature. The new approach is significantly more efficient than MD and generalizes earlier work on the quasicontinuum method. The method is validated by recovering equilibrium properties of single crystal Ni as a function of temperature. CG dynamical simulations of nano-indentation reveal a strong dependence on temperature of the critical stress to nucleate dislocations under the indenter.     

Critical behavior of light in mode-locked lasers

Light is shown to exhibit critical and tricritical behavior in passively mode-locked lasers with externally injected pulses. It is a first and unique example of critical phenomena in a one-dimensional many-body light-mode system. The phase diagrams consist of regimes with continuous wave, driven parapulses, spontaneous pulses via mode condensation, and heterogeneous pulses, separated by phase transition lines that terminate with critical or tricritical points. Enhanced non-Gaussian fluctuations and collective dynamics are present at the critical and tricritical points, showing a mode system analog of the critical opalescence phenomenon. The critical exponents are calculated and shown to comply with the mean field theory, which is rigorous in the light system.     

Absolute configurations of C34 and C35 of antibiotic niphimycin A

The relative configurations of four stereogenic centers of the C33‐C42 fragment of niphimycin A were assigned as 2S*, 3R*, 4S* and 6S*, based upon ¹H NMR analysis with double‐quantum filtered COSY and nuclear Overhauser spectroscopy experiments. These data were then correlated with absolute configurations at C36 and C38 of niphimycin A, which were declared previously as 36S and 38S [3]. This allowed for the assignment of the absolute configurations at C34 and C35 of niphimycin A as 34S and 35R. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Capillary liquid chromatographic fingerprint used for discrimination of Zingiber montanum from related species

Fingerprint analysis using capillary liquid chromatography (CLC) has been developed for discrimination of Zingiber montanum (ZM) from related species, for example Z. americans (ZA) and Z. zerumbet (ZZ). By comparing the fingerprint chromatograms of ZM, ZA, and ZZ we could identify ZM samples and discriminate them from ZA and ZZ by using their marker peaks. We also combined CLC fingerprint with multivariate analysis, including principal-component analysis (PCA) and canonical variate analysis (CVA); all three species were discriminated successfully. This result indicates that CLC fingerprint analysis in combination with PCA and CVA can be used for discrimination of ZM samples from samples of related species.

Synthesis and stereochemistry of 2-arylperhydrocyclopenta[b]pyridin-1-ols, 8-azaestrone fragments

Different stereoisomers of 2-arylperhydrocyclopenta[b]pyridin-1-ols, which form structural motifs of 8-azaestrone, were prepared via reductive cyclization from mono-oximes derived from 1,5-diketones, by using sodium borohydride and acetic acid in THF at reflux.
