Abstract We have employed the molecular model introduced first by Jaswal to compute the vibrational spectra of oxygen bearing defects in a silicon crystal. This was done in the context of a silicon molecular cluster with outer valencies terminated by hydrogen. We employ the MINDO/3 semi-empirical electronic structure method to compute the total energy of the molecular cluster. We examine the conditions in applications of the molecular model required for accurate predictions of oxygen local-mode vibrational frequencies. We find that the oxygen atom and its nearest neighbor silicon atoms must be allowed to vibrate. The nearest-neighbor and next nearest-neighbor shells of silicon atoms must be allowed to relax from their lattice positions. The outermost relaxed shell of silicon atoms should be bonded to silicon atoms in their lattice positions. We apply the molecular model to three defects of crystalline silicon; interstitial oxygen, oxygen in a vacancy (the A-center), and two oxygen atoms in a vacancy. Comparison of our computed local-mode oxygen vibration frequencies with experiment shows the computed oxygen local-mode frequencies to be almost uniformly 10% greater than those observed. Isotope shifts fit experiment equally well. We conclude that the molecular model represents an accurate and efficient approach for the computation of defect local mode vibrational frequencies for oxygen and other defects in crystalline silicon. 相似文献

We have found evidence of molecular vacancies in the herringbone molecular crystals pentacene and hexabenzo[bc,?ef,?hi,?kl,?no,?qr]coronene using electron diffraction. Experimental electron diffraction patterns taken parallel to the long molecular axis from these crystals exhibited streaking in two characteristic directions, and the streaking approximately followed the molecular herringbone directions. Molecular dynamics simulations of vacancies in pentacene showed that the streaks can be explained by anisotropic lattice relaxations near the defects. Simulated electron diffraction patterns from the crystal–vacancy models at finite temperatures showed streaking similar to the experimental data. The energy of formation of vacancies in pentacene was calculated to be 1.7?eV. The vacancy entropy in pentacene was simulated to be approximately 40 times the Boltzmann constant. We expect these molecular vacancies to influence charge transport and mechanical properties. 相似文献

Since considerable expansion of hematopoietic marrow occurs in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA), magnetic resonance images of 20 hips in 10 patients with known homozygous SCA were reviewed to determine a) if low signal hematopoietic marrow extended into the femoral capital epiphysis and b) if the MR characteristics of avascular necrosis (AVN) differed depending on the type of epiphyseal marrow. Our results revealed variable epiphyseal marrow type; mixed (fatty and hematopoietic) marrow (42%), fatty marrow (32%), hematopoietic marrow (16%) and hemosiderotic marrow (10%). AVN occurred irrespective of the underlying marrow. Segmental areas of low signal intensity in variable shapes (ring, band, crescent or large homogeneous area) was the most consistent MR manifestation of AVN in SCA. A low signal intensity peripheral rim surrounding a central zone, isointense with epiphyseal marrow on T1 and T2 weighted images, was most frequently observed similar to that described in patients without hemoglobinopathy. The notable difference, however, was of segmental areas within the same femoral head that demonstrated variable central zone signal on T2 weighted images. Further, while an increase in hip joint fluid is commonly seen with both early and advanced AVN in patients without hemoglobinopathy; it was increased in only one hip in patients with SCA. Combinatorial library screening offers a rapid process for identifying potential therapies to toxins. Hinge peptide libraries,
which rely on conformational diversity rather than traditional molecular diversity, reduce the need for huge numbers of syntheses
and screening steps and greatly expedite the discovery process of active molecules. Hinge peptide libraries having the structures:
Acetyl-X1–X2–hinge–X3–X4–NH2 (capped) and X1–hinge–X2–X3 (uncapped), where X1 through X4 are near-equimolar mixtures of twelve L-amino acids and hinge = 4-aminobutyric acid, were screened for inhibitory activity in bioassays for botulinum neurotoxins
A and B (BoNT/A, BoNT/B) and saxitoxin. The zinc protease activity of the reduced light chains of BoNT/A and /B was assayed
by measuring the cleavage of synthetic substrates. Saxitoxin activity was measured by the restoration of the viability of
neuroblastoma cells treated with ouabain and veratridine. Deconvolution of libraries was accomplished by fixing one position
at a time beginning with the C-terminus. Primary library subsets in which position 4 was fixed showed moderate levels of inhibition
for BoNT/A. Secondary library subsets showed stronger inhibition in the bioassays. In each of the bioassays, inhibitory potency
was stronger when the second position to be fixed was on the opposite side of the hinge, rather than on the same side with
respect to the C-terminus, suggesting that the hinge facilitates the interaction of side chains. Inhibitors for all three
of the toxins studied were discovered within library subsets, although not necessarily in primary subsets. These studies demonstrate
that (1) the best strategy for deconvoluting hinge peptide libraries is by fixing residues alternately on each side of the
hinge moiety, and (2) it is essential to investigate secondary subsets even when primary subsets are inactive. The present
findings support the concept that the increased flexibility imposed by the inclusion of a central hinge residue in small peptides
increases the opportunity for side chain interactions, providing a distinct advantage for hinge peptide libraries over conventional
peptide libraries. Hinge peptide libraries are a rich source of novel ligands for modulation of biomechanisms. The library
subsets uncovered in this study may possess peptides that will lead to effective therapies to neurotoxin poisoning. 相似文献

The helium energy spectrum in Martian orbit has been observed by the MARIE charged particle spectrometer aboard the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft. The orbital data were taken from March 13, 2002 to October 28, 2003, at which time a very intense Solar Particle Event caused a loss of communication between the instrument and the spacecraft. The silicon detector stack in MARIE is optimized for the detection of protons and helium in the energy range below , which typically includes almost all of the flux during SPEs. This also makes MARIE an efficient detector for GCR helium in the energy range of 50–. We will present the first fully normalized flux results from MARIE, using helium ions in this energy range. 相似文献

A black hole may carry quantum numbers that arenot associated with massless gauge fields, contrary to the spirit of the no-hair theorems. The quantum hair is invisible in the classical limit, but measurable via quantum interference experiments. Quantum hair alters the temperature of the radiation emitted by a black hole. It also induces non-zero expectation values for fields outside the event horizon; these expectation values are non-perturbative in , and decay exponentially far from the hole. In the study of integrable systems of ODE's arising from a Lax pair with a parameter, the constants of the motion occur as spectral curves. The specific curves depend upon the representation of the Lie algebra. In this paper a Galois theory of spectral curves is given that classifies the spectral curves from an integrable system. The spectral curves correspond to conjugacy classes of certain subgroups of the Weyl group for the Lie algebra. We report femtosecond pulse generation and chirped pulse amplification in Tm:fiber. A mode-locked oscillator operating in the soliton regime produced 800 fs pulses with 5 nm spectral bandwidth, at 40 pJ pulse energy. This oscillator seeded a pre-amplifier that utilizes a Raman soliton self-frequency shift to produce wavelength tunable pulses with 3 nJ energy, reduced pulse duration of 150 fs, and increased bandwidth of 30 nm. For further amplification, the pulses were stretched up to 160 ps using a chirped Bragg grating (CBG). Stretched pulses were amplified to 85 nJ after compression in single-mode Tm:fiber and recompressed with the CBG as short as 400 fs. Compressed pulses were coupled into a highly nonlinear tellurite fiber to investigate the potential of this ultrashort pulse 2-μm fiber source as a pump for mid-IR supercontinuum generation. 相似文献
