Insensitive bounds for the moments of the sojourn time distribution in the M/G/1 processor-sharing queue

This paper studies the M/G/1 processor-sharing (PS) queue, in particular the sojourn time distribution conditioned on the initial job size. Although several expressions for the Laplace-Stieltjes transform (LST) are known, these expressions are not suitable for computational purposes. This paper derives readily applicable insensitive bounds for all moments of the conditional sojourn time distribution. The instantaneous sojourn time, i.e., the sojourn time of an infinitesimally small job, leads to insensitive upper bounds requiring only knowledge of the traffic intensity and the initial job size. Interestingly, the upper bounds involve polynomials with so-called Eulerian numbers as coefficients. In addition, stochastic ordering and moment ordering results for the sojourn time distribution are obtained. On powers of Stieltjes moment sequences,II

We consider the set of Stieltjes moment sequences, for which every positive power is again a Stieltjes moment sequence, and prove an integral representation of the logarithm of the moment sequence in analogy to the Lévy–Khintchine representation. We use the result to construct product convolution semigroups with moments of all orders and to calculate their Mellin transforms. As an application we construct a positive generating function for the orthonormal Hermite polynomials.

Examination of the relationship between parameters to determine electropermeability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

A rectangular electric pulse was applied to Saccharomyces cerevisiae suspensions in NaCl solutions. The relationship between field strength, pulse width and conductivity of extracellular media of key--factors to determine the yield of electropermeability--was examined at the time when the same permeability occurred. The results showed that the dependence of the yield of permeability upon the width of applied pulse was mutually related with the conductivity of extracellular media. Namely at one field strength, the value of pulse width is inversely proportional to that of conductivity of media and its relationship holds true for any field strength. Further, the relationship between parameters considered bears a close resemblance to that recognized between stress amplitude and the number of cycles to failure in the fatigue fracture of materials.     

Opto-thermal radiometry and condenser-chamber method for stratum corneum water concentration measurements

Opto-thermal radiometry and the condenser-chamber TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss) method are two novel technologies for in-vivo skin studies. In this paper, for the first time, we combine the measurement results of the two technologies, and study the stratum corneum water concentration distribution, water status in stratum corneum, stratum corneum thickness as well as its swelling effects, and stratum corneum water-holding capabilities.
