Synthesis of 7,9-dideoxybaccatin IV analogs from sinenxan A

Sinenxan A, a taxoid isolated from callus tissue cultures of Taxus yunnanensis was converted into 13-oxo-7,9-dideoxy-2-debenzoyl-2-acetyl-baccatin IV and 7,9-dideoxy-2-debenzoyl-4-deacetyl-baccatin IV, a key framework of 1,7,9-trideoxypaclitaxel. Several special steps in this transformation are worthy of note: (1) deoxygenation by treatment with hypophosphorous acid at C-14 position; (2) a highly regioselective O-deacetylation of taxanes at C-5 position; and (3) stereoselective reduction of the 13-carbonyl group by transannular assistance from the C-4-hydroxyl.     

Synthesis, spectroscopic studies and crystal structure of a polyoxoanion cluster incorporating para-bromophenylimido ligand, (Bu4N)2[Mo6O18(NC6H4Br-p)]

An organic-inorganic hybrid compound, (Bu₄N)₂[Mo₆O₁₈(NAr)] (Ar = p-BrC₆H₄) has been synthesized via the DCC dehydrating protocol of the reaction of [α-Mo₈O₂₆]⁴⁻ with 4-bromoaniline hydrochloride in anhydrous acetonitrile, which has been characterized by UV-Vis spectra, ¹H NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction study. By comparing the UV-Vis spectra, which were used to monitor the reaction, the optimum preparative condition for this compound was also determined. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/n, which is featured in a terminal para-bromophenylimido group linked to an Mo atom of a hexamolybdate cluster by a Mo-N triply bond. In addition, there are π-π dimerization of the neighboring cluster anions though the parallel aromatic rings in their crystals.     

A new isocoumarin from bark of Pellodendron chinense

A new isocoumarin, 3-acetyl-3,4-dihydro-5,6-dimethoxy-1H-2-benzopyran-1-one, was isolated from the cortex of Phellodendron chinense schneid. The structure was determined on the basis of spectroscopic evidences.     

Photoinduced electron transfer between adamantanamine-(OCH2CH2)n-phenothiazine and mono-6-p-nitrobenzoyl-β-cyclodextrin

A series of adamantanamine-(OCH₂CH₂)_n-phenothiazine (n = 0, 1, 2, 3) electron donors was synthesized. Photoinduced electron transfer was observed in the supramolecular complex of the phenothiazine derivatives with p-nitrobenzoyl-β-cyclodextrin (NBCD) through binding of the adamantyl group by the NBCD cavity, which is stabilized clearly via hydrophobic interactions in aqueous solution. Detailed Stern–Volmer constants were measured and they were partitioned into dynamic Stern–Volmer quenching constants and static binding constants. The results revealed an efficient electron transfer process inside the supramolecular systems compared to that controlled by diffusion. This observation also indicates that the chain length will influence the electron transfer efficiency of a supramolecular donor–acceptor system.     

Perthio- and perseleno-1,3-butadienes, -but-1-ene-3-ynes,and -[3]-cumulenes: one-step syntheses from 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadiyne

[reaction: see text] Treatment of 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadiyne (1) with dichalcogenides RSSR or RSeSeR affords dithio- and diseleno-1,3-butadiynes (2, 3), perthio- and perseleno-[3]-cumulenes (4, 5), perthio- and perseleno-1,3-butadienes (6, 7), and/or perthio- and perseleno-but-1-ene-3-ynes (8, 9). The products can be controlled by stoichiometry and temperature, by the presence or absence of oxygen, and by choice of the "R" group. By X-ray crystallography, hexa(methylthio)-1,3-butadiene is highly twisted, with a torsion angle [Phi(CCCC)] of 84.7 degrees and an elongated C(2)-C(3) distance of 1.484(3) A.

Micellization and gelation of aqueous solutions of star-shaped PEG-PCL block copolymers consisting of branched 4-arm poly(ethylene glycol) and polycaprolactone blocks

Star-shaped block copolymers consisting of non-toxic poly(ethylene glycol) and biodegradable polycaprolactone ((PEG5K-PCL)₄) were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of the ε-caprolactone monomer with hydroxyl-terminated 4-armed PEG as initiator. These biodegradable, amphiphilic star block copolymers showed micellization and sol-gel transition behaviors in aqueous solution with varying concentration and temperature. In the dilute aqueous solutions of star block copolymers, micellization behavior occurred over specific concentration. The 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) solubilization method was used to determine the critical micellization concentration (CMC) of star block copolymers. The obtained micelle size increased with increasing hydrophobic PCL block length. In high-concentration solutions, the star block copolymers showed temperature-sensitive sol-gel transition behavior. The morphology of the micelle and gel was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). As a result, the micelles showed a core-corona spherical structure at concentration near CMC, while the gel showed a mountain-chain-like morphology picture. It was proposed that with increasing the micelle concentration the worm-like micelle clusters formed firstly and the gel was constructed by the packing of micelle clusters.

A Novel Polyoxovanadium Cluster Shell: β‐As8V14O42

The hydrothermal reaction of VOSO₄, As₂O₅, piperazine and H₂O produces [H₂N(CH₂)₄NH₂]₄[β‐As₈V₁₄O₄₂(SO₄)]·2HSO₄ ( 1 ), which is the first arsenic‐vanadium cluster containing a spherical β‐As₈V₁₄O₄₂ shell. The structure of this compound was characterized by single crystal X‐ray diffraction, elemental analysis, TG, and IR spectrum. Crystal data for 1 : Orthorhombic, Cmcm, a = 15.369(1) Å, b = 16.404(1) Å, c = 25.772(1) Å, V = 6497.4(9) ų, Z = 4.     

Solvent extraction of uranium(VI) with benzyloctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (BODMAC) from highly concentrated chloride solution

The ²²²Rn emanation fraction (EF) released from the technically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TE-NORM) wastes at certain sites of petroleum and gas production was determined. The samples were analyzed by γ-ray spectrometry to determine the activity concentration of the ²²⁶Ra content, of which the ²²²Rn emanation fraction was calculated. The results showed that the ²²²Rn emanation fraction differs in the oil and gas production sites and it is independent of the activity concentration of ²²⁶Ra.
