Franck-Condon effects in collision-induced electronic energy transfer: I2(E; v = 1,2) + He, Ar

Collisions of I2 in the E electronic state with rare gas atoms result in electronic energy transfer to the D, beta, and D' ion-pair electronic states. Rate constants for each of these channels have been measured when I2 is initially prepared in the J = 55, nu = 1 and 2 levels in the E state. The rate constants and effective hard sphere collision cross sections confirm the trends observed when nu = 0 in the E state is initially prepared: He collisions favor population of the D state, while Ar collisions favor population of the beta state. Final state vibrational level distributions are determined by spectral simulation and are found to be qualitatively consistent with the trends in the Franck-Condon factors. The experimental distributions are also compared to the recent quantum scattering calculations of Tscherbul and Buchachenko.     

Total synthesis of (-)- and (+)-lentiginosine

Total synthesis of (-)-lentiginosine was achieved from D-mannitol using highly stereoselective reactions. Similarly, (+)-lentiginosine was synthesized from L-tartaric acid.     

Chain-transfer constant of fluoroalcohols

Chain transfer constants of some fluoroalcohols [HCF₂(CF₂)_n?1CH₂OH, n = 2, 4, 6] in the catalyzed polymerization of vinyl acetate, styrene, acrylonitrile, and methyl methacrylate at 60°C have been evaluated by a method based on degree of polymerization. Since fluoroalcohols are normally nonsolvents for polymers, a homogeneous reaction phase is maintained by carrying out the polymerization in benzene (except in case of acrylonitrile, where no solvent was used). The transfer constants vary, depending on the reactivity as well as the polarity of the radicals, in the following order: vinyl acetate > styrene > methyl methacrylate > acrylonitrile. Of the three fluoroalcohols studied, the transfer constants increase with the increasing value of n. The results have been interpreted in terms of polar structure contribution in the transition state of the transfer reactions.     

Solvothermal synthesis of an open-framework zinc chlorophosphate, [C8N4H26][Zn3Cl(HPO4)3(PO4)], with a layer structure

A solvothermal reaction of ZnO, HCl, H₃PO₄, and N,N′(3-bisaminopropyl)-1,2-ethylenediamine (BAPEN) in diethyleneglycol at 160°C yields a new zinc chlorophosphate, [C₈N₄H₂₆][Zn₃Cl(HPO₄)₃(PO₄)], I. The structure comprises ZnO₄, ZnO₃Cl, HPO₄ and PO₄ tetrahedral units connected through their vertices giving rise to a layered structure with 10-membered apertures. The position of the Zn and P atoms gives rise to double-four ring like building unit with one Zn missing. The fully protonated amine molecules occupy the inter-lamellar region and interacts with the framework through N-H?O hydrogen bonds. Crystal data: M=792.85, orthorhombic, space group=Pca2₁ (no. 29), a=9.8410(2), b=15.0912(2), c=16.1220(4) Å, V=2394.32(8) Å³, Z=4, ρ_calc=2.199 g cm⁻³, μ(MoKα)=3.443 mm⁻¹, R₁=0.0520, wR₂=0.1256 and S=1.054.     

2-(2-Selenocyanic acid ethyl ester)-1H-benz[de] isoquinoline-1,3-(2H)-dione, synthesis photophysics and interaction with bovine serum albumin: a spectroscopic approach

The compound 2-(2-selenocyanic acid ethyl ester)-1H-benz[de] isoquinoline-1,3-(2H)-dione (SEBID), a ubiquitous, bioactive naphthalimide derivative is expected to possess an anticancer, anti-tumor and other important therapeutic activities of significant potency with low systematic toxicity. In this paper, the synthesis of the compound, photophysics of the newly prepared naphthalimide derivative and its interaction with model transport protein Bovine serum albumin (BSA) have been reported using the absorption and steady state fluorescence spectroscopic techniques exploiting the intrinsic fluorescence emission properties of BSA as a probe. Interaction of this organoselenium compound in different dioxane-water mixtures with increase in the polarity of the medium has been studied spectroscopically. Interaction of SEBID with BSA leads to a dramatic decrease in the fluorescence intensity of BSA, which suggests the binding of SEBID with the tryptophan residue of BSA. Furthermore, different thermodynamic parameters for SEBID-BSA interaction have been calculated. Rationalization of the data has been attempted, particularly in relation to prospective applications in the biomedical research.     

Radical promoted Wagner-Meerwein-type rearrangement of epoxides in camphoric systems using a Ti(III) radical source

[Chemical reaction: see text] A radical based Wagner-Meerwein-type rearrangement has been observed in camphoric systems. The radical was generated from the epoxide using Cp2TiCl as the radical source. The radical initiator Cp2TiCl was prepared in situ from commercially available Cp2TiCl2 and Zn dust in THF under argon.     

An interesting ring contraction of a class of bromohydrins and trans-dibromides

An efficient ring contraction of stereoisomeric 1,2-benzo-4-bromo-3-hydroxycyclohept-1-ene and their derivatives (1a-e) to (2a-c) is reported, and a probable mechanism for this ring contraction has been suggested.     

Antistatic applications of conducting polyaniline

A method is described to impart flexibility and mechanical strength to conducting polyaniline by polymerizing aniline on fabrics and on cellulose papers. The study indicates that these conducting fabrics offer 16–18 dB of shielding effectiveness for the control of electromagnetic interference (EMI) up to a frequency of 10³ MHz.     

Anomalies in the asymmetric hydroboration of olefins with the 11 adduct of (+)-α-pinene and BH3 · THF

The hydroboration of cis-2-butene and cis-3-hexene with pure diisopinocampheylborane (IPC₂BH) and monoisopinocampheylborane (IPCBH₂), both prepared from (+)-α-pinene, were studied. In contrast to IPC₂BH, which yielded R-(?)-2-butanol and R-(?)-3-hexanol in 98.4 and 94.5% optical purities, IPCBH₂ yielded S-(+)-2-butanol and S-(+)-3-hexanol in 23.6 and 19.7% optical purifies respectively. PMR examination of the methanolyzed products were utilized to establish the species present in the freshly prepared and aged $\text{1}\text{1}$ adduct from (+)-α-pinene and BH₃ · THF. The results confirm the interpretation previously advanced for the major differences realized in asymmetric hydroboration with the fresh and aged $\text{1}\text{1}$ adducts.     

Spectroscopic and biological studies on newly synthesized nickel(II) complexes of semicarbazones and thiosemicarbazones

Nickel(II) complexes, having the general composition Ni(L)2X2, have been synthesized [where L: isopropyl methyl ketone semicarbazone (LLA), isopropyl methyl ketone thiosemicarbazone (LLB), 4-aminoacetophenone semicarbazone (LLC) and 4-aminoacetophenone thiosemicarbazone (LLD) and X=Cl-, 1/2SO(4)2-]. All the Ni(II) complexes reported here have been characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moments, IR, electronic and mass spectral studies. All the complexes were found to have magnetic moments corresponding to two unpaired electrons. The possible geometries of the complexes were assigned on the basis of electronic and infrared spectral studies. Newly synthesized ligand and its nickel(II) complexes have been screened against different bacterial and fungal growth.
