Positron annihilation studies on radiation‐crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels

The temperature‐sensitive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels, prepared by γ and electron‐beam (EB) irradiation, were studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). The effect of water content in the hydrogel on the ortho‐positronium (o‐Ps) lifetime and intensity was investigated. The observed positronium lifetime suggests microstructural differences between γ‐ and EB‐synthesized hydrogels. The distribution in positronium lifetime indicates nonhomogeneity in the distribution of free‐volume holes in EB‐synthesized hydrogels. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Probing the microstructure of Nafion-117 using positron annihilation spectroscopy

We report a new result on positron annihilation studies in acid- and cation-neutralized (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺, Cs⁺, UO₂²⁺, Ni²⁺) Nafion membranes using positron lifetime and Doppler-broadened annihilation radiation (DBAR) measurements. The free-volume structure is characterized using a simple quantum mechanical model of positronium (Ps) in a spherical well. Our studies indicate that formation and expansion of clusters is always associated with a change in free-volume structure resulting in smaller free-volume holes. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Parity of the band head at 3710 keV in 99Rh using clover detector as compton polarimeter

Clover detector has been used as a Compton polarimeter to measure the linear polarization of γ-rays produced in heavy ion fusion reaction. The polarization sensitivity of the clover detector has been measured over γ-ray energies ranging from 386 to 1368 ke V. The E1 multipolarity of the 1117 keV transition in ⁹⁹Rh has been established using this polarimeter. This has resulted in the assignment of negative parity to the band head at 3710 keV in ⁹⁹Rh.     

An alternative approach to determine the spot-size of a multi-mode laser beam and its application to diode laser beams

An alternative approach is suggested to determine the spot-size of a multi-mode laser beam. It has been shown by simulations that the suggested approach can give the beam quality factor and characteristic radius with less than 5% error. Unlike the power content method, the proposed method is applicable to the beams even with diameter one tenth of the CCD size. The new approach has been applied to a multi-mode diode laser output and it is shown that the ABCD matrix analysis can be used for beam propagation, with the measured parameters of the laser.     

Water‐Triggered Frontal Polymerization

A totally new mode of frontal polymerization (FP) of acrylamide is established which is triggered by the simple addition of a minute, specific volume of water. Experimental conditions under which this mode of polymerization yields linear and water‐soluble polyacrylamide were carefully established, paving the way to synthesize commercially pertinent homo‐ and copolymers. A new redox couple was identified to circumvent the imidization and the ensuing gelation, hitherto associated with FP of acrylamide. Effects of reaction variables such as type and concentration of redox couple and volume of water on measurable parameters of FP such as front velocity, front temperature, shape of front and yield have been studied. Two types of redox couples are reported. Nonplanar frontal regime was observed in few redox couples. We could visually observe helical patterns with naked eyes, while layered patterns were observable under SEM. Additionally, micro‐phase separation and heterogeneity in the polymer matrix was observed due to unreacted pockets of monomer which evolve via bulk mode. This nonlinear phenomenon is described.

     

Monotonicity of polymatroids

Unlike matroids, it is observed that there is an upper bound for the numberk such that the polymatroid isk-monotone. We define this upper bound as the monotonicity of polymatroid. We aim to calculate the value of this quantity in terms of the ground rank function of the polymatroid.
