Lasing characteristics of a pendant drop deformed by an applied electric field

The lasing properties of an oval-shaped resonant cavity (ORC) with a continuously variable aspect ratio have been studied. The ORC was formed with a dye-doped pendant drop placed inside a variable static electric field. When the drop ORC was pumped by a nitrogen laser, lasing from the ORC was found to have strong directional emission characteristics and an intensity enhancement factor as great as 19.5. Calculated results of light rays escaping from ORC's by refraction are in good agreement with the experimental data.     

Synthesis of nanosized Si composite anode material for Li-ion batteries

A simple method was proposed to prepare nanosized Si composite anode materials for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. The preparation started with the shock-type ball milling of silicon in liquid media of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/dimethylformamide (DMF) solution, forming slurry where the nano-Si particles were uniformly dispersed, followed by the drying of the slurry to remove DMF. The nanosized Si composite anode material was obtained after the pyrolysis of the mixture at 300 °C where the pyrolyzed PAN provided a conductive matrix to relieve the morphological change of Si during cycling. As-prepared composite presented good cyclability for lithium storage. The proposed process paves an effective way to prepare high performance Si, Sn, Sb and their alloys based composite anode materials for Li-ion batteries.     

Widely tunable, high-repetition-rate, dual signal-wave optical parametric oscillator by using two periodically poled crystals

This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5 μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5 nm to 69.1 nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO₄ laser operating at 50 kHz. At an incident pump power of 3 W, an average output power of 169.6 mW at 1489.2 nm and 1558.3 nm has been achieved.     

Synthesis and properties of amphoteric copolymer of 5‐vinyltetrazole and vinylbenzyl phosphonic acid

Amphoteric polymers have been studied for various applications such as separation of low molecular weight organic molecules from inorganic salt mixtures, selective ion transport, drug delivery through membranes of biological interest, separation of ionic drugs and proteins, and separation of alcohol and water. Typical amphoteric polymers consist of weak base and weak acid groups. In present study, the copolymerization of 5‐vinyltetrazole (VT) and diisopropyl‐p‐vinylbenzyl phosphate (DIPVBP) via free radical polymerization is studied. The reactivity ratio of VT and DIPVBP, which is calculated from Kelen‐Tudos plot, is 0.251 and 0.345, respectively. The amphoteric copolymer of VT and diisopropyl‐p‐vinylbenzyl phosphonic acid (poly(VT‐co‐VBPA)) is obtained from hydrolysis of the copolymer of VT and DIPVBP (poly(VT‐co‐DIPVBP)). Poly(VT‐co‐VBPA) is thermally stable under 190 °C. The anhydrous proton conductivity of amphoteric poly(VT‐co‐VBPA) can reach 1.54 × 10^‐4 S cm^?1 at 170 °C with an activation energy of 114.7 kJ mol^?1. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Abatement of hydrocarbons by acid ZSM-5 and BETA zeolites under cold-start conditions

Simulated cold-start tests have been carried out to evaluate the performance of H-ZSM-5 and H-BETA zeolites as hydrocarbon traps under simulated gasoline car exhaust gases, paying special attention to the effect of water on their behaviour. It is concluded that the hydrothermal treatment of the zeolites in the acidic form contributes to the better performance of these materials as hydrocarbon traps since the stabilization of the zeolites takes place. Moreover, the decrease of the surface acidity of the zeolites results in an increase of the Si/Al ratio, which contributes to the decrease of the water affinity for adsorption sites. Thus, the competition with hydrocarbon molecules in the exhaust for the adsorption sites is reduced which increases their trap efficiency. The stabilized H-ZSM-5 is the zeolite that showed the best performance with a propene offset temperature of 240 °C, which should be high enough for the three-way catalyst to carry out its role as catalytic converter.     

Smooth solutions for a stochastic hydrodynamical equation in Heisenberg paramagnet

In this article, we consider a stochastic hydrodynamical equation in Heisenberg paramagnet driven by additive noise. We prove the existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to this equation with difference method.

Chemical constituents from Schisandra sphenanthera

The chemical constituents of the stems of Schisandra sphenanthera are described for the first time. This investigation has resulted in the isolation of a new phenolic glycoside （1）, along with seven known compounds. The structure of 1 was assigned by using spectroscopic techniques, including 2D NMR spectra.
