Schematic design of a complex thin-film luminescent screen usable for vacuum fluorescent and field emission display

Based on the facts related to solid-state cathodoluminescence, mixed excitation, and serial excitation recently discovered in our laboratory, a fundamental schematic design and a series of different schematic elaborated designs are proposed for protection from electron accumulation, reasonable use of a luminescent screen, and enhancement of light intensity.     

Flux vector formulation for photon propagation in the biological tissue

We present a generalized delta-Eddington phase function to simplify the radiative transfer equation to an integral equation with respect to the photon flux vector. The solution of the integral equation is highly accurate to model the photon propagation in the biological tissue over a broad range of optical parameters, especially in the visible light spectrum where the diffusion approximation breaks down. The methodology is validated in the Monte Carlo simulation and can be applied in various optical imaging applications.     

Precision measurement of the refractive index of carbon dioxide with a frequency comb

We report a higher precision measurement of the refractive index of carbon dioxide using a frequency comb as the light source in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer setup. The experimental sensitivity can reach the level of 8.8x10(-9). Taking into account the measurement accuracy of temperature and pressure, the experimental accuracy has a value of 1.2x10(-8). The measurement result has a deviation from the commonly quoted result [Old , J. Opt. Soc. Am.61, 89 (1971)] by 6.4x10(-7) at 800 nm.     

Interferometry from a scattering medium

A two-beam random interferometer is demonstrated where coupling is facilitated by a scattering medium. A modulation observed in the normalized second-order intensity frequency correlation of the transmitted light is attributed to the relative temporal delay of the two beams and is insensitive to beam alignment and spacing.     

Regenerative pulsation in silica microspheres

Regenerative pulsation from whispering gallery modes excited by a continuous-wave laser beam is observed in silica microspheres that feature a diminishing thermal nonlinearity near 20 K. The regenerative pulsation arises from the competition between Kerr nonlinearity and the much reduced thermal nonlinearity, when the two nonlinearities with very different timescales are comparable in magnitude but opposite in sign.     

Calcium Ion-Induced Stabilization and Refolding of Agkisacutacin from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Agkistrodon Acutus</Emphasis> Venom Studied by Fluorescent Spectroscopy

Agkisacutacin isolated from the venom of Agkistrodon acutus is a coagulation factor IX / coagulation factor X-binding protein with marked anticoagulant- and platelet-modulating activities. Ca²⁺ ion-induced stabilization and refolding of Agkisacutacin have been studied by following fluorescent measurements. Ca²⁺ ions not only increase the structural stability of agkisacutacin against GdnHCl denaturation, but also induce its refolding. The GdnHCl-induced unfolding of the apo-agkisacutacin and the purified agkisacutacin is a single-step process with no detectable intermediate state. Ca²⁺ ions play an important role in the stabilization of the structure of agkisacutacin. Ca²⁺-stabilized agkisacutacin exhibits higher resistance to GdnHCl denaturation than the apo-agkisacutacin. It is possible to induce refolding of the unfolded apo-agkisacutacin merely by adding 1 mM Ca²⁺ ions without changing the concentration of the denaturant. The kinetic result of Ca²⁺-induced refolding provides evidences for that agkisacutacin consists of at least two refolding phases and the first phase of Ca²⁺-induced refolding should involve the formation of the compact Ca²⁺-binding site regions, and subsequently, the protein undergoes further conformational rearrangements to form the native structure.     

Recent advances on the pesticidal activity evaluations of sulfone derivatives: A 2010 to 2020 decade in mini-review

Sulfone derivatives, an important synthetic strategy in drug discovery, are acquiring more importance in plant protection field in recent years because of their pesticide activities, such as antifungal, antibacterial, acaricidal, insecticidal, herbicidal, and antiviral activity. Introduction of different pharmacophores into sulfone framework can afford a series of sulfone derivatives to build some sulfone derivatives as novel active molecules. The purpose of this review was to collate literature work reported by researchers on sulfone derivatives for their various pesticidal activities from year 2010 to 2020.     

Enantioselective Total Synthesis of (+)-Nordasycarpidone, (+)-Dasycarpidone,and (+)-Uleine

The structure of uleine type alkaloids is characterized by the presence of a bridged tetracyclic hexahydro-1H-1,5-methanoazocino[4,3-b]indole ring system 1 . Various strategies have been developed to access this polycyclic structural motif. We report herein a one-step conversion of appropriately functionalized 1,3,4-trisubstituted cyclopent-1-ene to 1 by way of an integrated oxidation/reduction/cyclization (iORC) process. This domino sequence, initiated by oxidative cleavage of cyclopentene ring, generated subsequently a cyclohexenone, an indole and a 1,3-bridged piperidine ring through formation of one C−C and two C−N bonds. Compound 1 is subsequently converted to nordasycarpidone, dasycarpidone and uleine. The chirality of the molecule was introduced by enzymatic desymmetrization of commercially available meso cis-3,5-diacetoxy-1-cyclopentene.

Microalgae separation by inertia-enhanced pinched flow fractionation

To improve the accuracy and efficiency of ships’ ballast water detection, the separation of microalgae according to size is significant. In this article, a method to separate microalgae based on inertia-enhanced pinched flow fractionation (iPFF) was reported. The method utilized the inertial lift force induced by flow to separate microalgae according to size continuously. The experimental results show that, as the Reynolds number increases, the separation effect becomes better at first, but then stays unchanged. The best separation effect can be obtained when the Reynolds number is 12.3. In addition, with the increase of the flow rate ratio between sheath fluid and microalgae mixture, the separation effect becomes better and the best separation effect can be obtained when the flow rate ratio reaches 10. In this case, the recovery rate of Tetraselmis sp. is about 90%, and the purity is about 86%; the recovery rate of Chlorella sp. is as high as 99%, and the purity is about 99%. After that, the separation effect keeps getting better but very slowly. In general, this study provides a simple method for the separation of microalgae with different sizes, and lays a foundation for the accurate detection of microalgae in the ballast water.
