The infrared and laser-Raman spectra of crystalline Mg₃(VO₄)₂ are reported and a factor group analysis for the full lattice is presented to support the discussion. The 1,000 to 600 cm^?1 region of the spectrum is essentially related to internal (stretching) modes of the greatly distorted VO₄ tetrahedra, whereas the bands in the low frequency region must be assigned to complex vibrations originating in the interaction of the bending vibrations of the tetrahedral groups with the external modes.     

Porous nanocomposites of zirconium dioxide and silicate

Highly porous nanocomposites of zirconium dioxide and silicate are synthesised in an aqueous system from an inorganic salt of zirconium; the nanacomposites, with tailorable pore structures, exhibit superior performance as catalyst supports.     

Synthesis and characterization of chitosan-graft-polycaprolactone copolymers

The graft copolymers of chitosan with polycaprolactone (PCL) were prepared through a protection-graft-deprotection route using phthaloylchitosan as intermediate. PCL macromonomers terminated with isocyanate groups reacted with hydroxyl groups of phthaloyl-protected chitosan regioselectively, and then phthaloyl groups were deprotected to give the free amino groups. The graft reaction was carried out in homogeneous system and yielded copolymers with high grafting content due to solubilization. FTIR, NMR and XRD were detected to characterize the resultant chitosan-graft-PCL copolymers.     

Co-C bond dissociation energy and reaction volume change of 2',5'-dideoxyadenosylcobalamin studied by laser-induced time-resolved photoacoustic calorimetry

Time resolved photoacoustic calorimetry (PAC) was applied to a study of the photolysis of a coenzyme B(12) analog 2',5'-dideoxyadenosylcobalamin, which lacks an -OH group at the 2' position of ribofuranose ring. In aqueous solution, we report for the first time the quantum yield Phi(d) (0.25+/-0.02), Co-C bond dissociation energy (BDE; 31.8+/-2.5 kcal mol(-1)) and reaction volume change deltaV(R) (6.5+/-0.5 ml mol(-1)) due to conformation changes of the corrin ring and its side chains accompanying the cleavage of the Co-C bond. These values for the analog are very similar to those for the natural cofactor. Based our results and previous studies, a possible explanation for the similarity in their structure and properties versus the large difference in their enzymatic activity is discussed.     

Das dielektrische Verhalten von Polyäthern zwischen Mikrowellen- und Infrarot-Gebiet

Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Absorption und Dispersion verschiedener Polyäther im Mikrowellengebiet und im fernen IR untersucht. Mit wachsender Sauerstoffzahl in der Kette werden die Torsions- und Biegeschwingungen wachsend IR-aktiv. Ihre Frequenzlagen ändern sich mit dem zunehmend polaren Charakter der Struktur. Die Analogie zwischen der Verschiebung der Schwingungsfrequenzen und dem Verlauf der Schmelztemperaturen wird diskutiert.Mit zunehmend polarem Charakter steigen der Temperaturkoeffizient der Molpolarisation und die Differenz (–n ²) der Dielektrizitätskonstanten im Mikrowellengebiet und im optischen Bereich stark an. Ein Vergleich mit der Höhe der Dispersionsstufen im fernen IR und deren Temperaturabhängigkeit ergab, daß diese zusätzliche Polarisation nicht allein durch die IR-aktiven Banden bedingt ist. Sie muß gekoppelt sein mit dem ebenfalls stark anwachsenden Untergrundverlust im gesamten mm- und sub-mm-Gebiet.

Summary Absorption and dispersion of several polyethers were measured in the microwave region and in the far infrared. The torsional vibrations become increasingly iractive with increasing number of oxygens in the chain. Their frequencies shift, too, in a manner analogues to the variation of the melting temperatures.The temperature coefficient of the mol polarization at 32 GHz and the difference (–n ²) between microwave and optical dielectric constant rise rapidly with increasing polar character of the structure. It was tried to correlate (–n ²) with the overall absorption of the skeletal vibrations. Height and temperature dependence of the far ir dispersion show, however, that the larger part of this additional polarization cannot be accounted for by the resonance absorption bands. It must be correlated with the background loss which extends over the whole mm and sub-mm range and also increases rapidly with increasingly polar structure.

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PHTHALAZINONE POLY(ARYL ETHER SULFONE KETONE)WITH CARBONYL GROUP*

A kind of novel heat-resistant, high performance engineering thermoplastic phthalazinone poly(aryl ether sulfoneketone) (PPESK) containing a carboxyl group in its side chain was prepared by the nucleophilic displacement reaction of 4-(4-hydroxylphenyl)-1(2H)-phthalazinone with di(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone, 4,4'-difluoro-benzophenone and phenolphthalin insulfolane in the presence of K_2CO_3 to produce high molecular weight polymers which can be dissolved in some polarsolvents such as chloroform and nitrobenzene at room temperature and can be easily can into flexible, yellowish andtransparent films. PPESK is an amorphous polymer having a decomposition temperature above 400℃, which indicates that ithas high thermal stability. At the same time, the thermal properties of PPESKs with dicyandiamide (DICY) as curing agentindicated that the heat-resistance properties of the PPESKs are improved after curing. The apparent activation energy (ΔE) ofthe cross-linking reaction and the reaction order (n) of PPESK/DICY were found to be 52.2 kJ/mol and ca. 1.0, respectively.Therefore, the cross-linking reaction is approximately a first order reaction.     

Trihydroxy-2-thiaquinolizidine derivatives as a new class of bicyclic glycosidase inhibitors

Trihydroxy-2-thiaquinolizidines, a new class of bicyclic dideoxy-iminohexitol glycosidase inhibitor derivatives with nominally the d-gluco, l-ido, d-manno and l-gulo configurations were synthesized. X-ray analyses indicated that the preferred conformation for d-gluco and d-manno derivatives was a flat trans-fused system. Unlike deoxynojirimycin, the compound with d-gluco configuration was selective for α-glucosidases (yeast and rice) and showed no inhibitory activity towards β-glucosidase (almond), α-galactosidase (green coffee beans), α-galactosidase (E. coli) and α-mannosidase (jack bean), while the l-ido derivative was specific for β-glucosidase (almond).     

Formation and Crystal Structure of [(F5TeOXe)+·SO2ClF][Sb(OTeF5)6-]

Xe(OTeF₅)₂ reacts with Sb(OTeF₅)₃ under the formation of [Xe₂(OTeF₅)₃]⁺[Sb(OTeF₅)₆]^-. From SO₂ClF solution a yellow solvate [F₅TeOXe]⁺·SO₂ClF· [Sb(OTeF₅)₆]^- is formed with the crystal data: a = 1028.1(1), b = 1040.9(1), c = 1780.2(3) pm, α = 98.07(1), β = 97.68(1), γ = 105.82(1)°, space group . The O-Xe···O fragment is essentially linear (176.1(2)°), and the two Xe-O distances are quite different 197.1(4) and 242.6(4) pm.
