Exact solutions of solid-liquid phase-change heat transfer when subjected to convective boundary conditions

A closed-form expression is presented to find the location of solid-liquid interface motion in convection-dominated solidification and melting problems. In this regard, the solutions are expressed in terms of the generalized representations of error functions,E (u, v) andF (u, v), which are useful to heat-conduction problems with convective-type boundary conditions. It is demonstrated that for constant surface temperature, the interface solution reduces to the classical Neumann solution.     

Unsteady and steady mass transfer by laminar forced flow against a rotating disk

Unsteady mass transfer in a steady flow field of a laminar forced flow against a rotating disk is analyzed by using a very effective solution method. Rigorous numerical solutions have been obtained for steady and unsteady mass transfer for any relative flow strength of external flow and rotation-induced flow for 0.1 ≤Sc ≤ 10000. Simple but very accurate correlation equations of Sherwood number for both the steady and unsteady mass transfer are proposed.     

New disc-shaped mesogens based on pentakis(phenylethynyl)benzene derivatives

First examples of amphiphilic alkyl pentakis(phenylethynyl)benzene ethers containing functional groups at the terminal position of their alkoxy chains were synthesized by etherification of pentabromophenol with 11-bromoundecan-1-ol and 11-bromoundecanoic acid ethyl ester, respectively, and subsequent palladium catalyzed, fivefold coupling reactions with the substituted phenylacetylene. Two undecanoic acid derivatives with different pentakis(phenylethynyl)phenoxy substituents in the ω-position were prepared by ester cleavage from the corresponding ethyl esters. The thermal behaviours of five penta-alkynes in their pure states, as well as of their charge transfer complexes formed from mixtures with 2,4,7-tri-nitrofluorenone, were examined.
