A study of some parameters relevant to the response of harwell PMMA dosimeters to gamma and electron irradiation

The effects on the radiation response of Harwell polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) dosimeters of dose-rate, radiation type, temperature during irradiation and post-irradiation storage, and post-irradiation stability, are of importance to the operators of commercial irradiation facilities.

This paper describes recent studies of the effects of some of these parameters on the radiation response of Harwell Red 4034, Amber 3042, and Gammachrome YR Perspex dosimeters, and provides data on batch to batch variation and shelf-life.

Calculated properties of some possible vinyl chloride metabolites

There is considerable evidence indicating that the carcinogenic action of vinyl chloride involves metabolic conversion to the epoxide (chlorooxirane) as the initial step. In order to learn more about its subsequent behavior, we have computed structures, energies and other properties for two different protonated forms of the epoxide, and also for two possible rearrangement products, chloroacetaldehyde and acetyl chloride. An ab initio SCF -MO procedure (GAUSSIAN 70) was used. Oxygen protonation is found to weaken both C? O bonds, the effect being greater for the bond involving the carbon bearing the chlorine. Chlorine protonation leads to a marked weakening of the C? Cl bond; this suggests a possible loss of HCl, leaving behind a carbonium ion (and possible alkylating agent or rearrangement precursor). Thus, while C? O bond breaking is doubtless an important reaction pathway for chlorooxirane, our results indicate that attention should also be focused upon the C? Cl bond; its rupture may conceivably be a key step in the biological action of vinyl chloride.     

Characterization of the sorption of gaseous and organic solutes onto polydimethyl siloxane solid-phase microextraction surfaces using the Abraham model

Water-to-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and gas-to-PDMS sorption coefficients have been compiled for 170 gaseous and organic solutes. Both sets of sorption coefficients were analyzed using the Abraham solvation parameter model. Correlations were obtained for both "dry" headspace solid-phase microextraction and conventional "wet" PDMS coated surfaces. The derived equations correlated the experimental water-to-PDMS and gas-to-PDMS data to better than 0.17 and 0.18 log units, respectively. In the case of the gas-to-PDMS sorption coefficients, the experimental values spanned a range of approximately 11 log units.     

Tactile aids for profoundly deaf children

This paper treats acoustic-tactile communication aids for the deaf. Children who obtain negligible help from conventional hearing aids are of particular interest. For the prelingually deaf child tactile aids may facilitate the acquisition of lipreading, and improve vocal production. Although attempts to use tactile aids for the deaf go back many years, only recently have developments in technology led to greatly improved processing possibilities and the feasibility of aids that can be worn. Here, we report case studies in which prelingually, profoundly deaf young children used wearable tactile aids.     

Dynkin Diagram Classification of λ-Minuscule Bruhat Lattices and of d-Complete Posets

d-Complete posets are defined to be posets which satisfy certain local structural conditions. These posets play or conjecturally play several roles in algebraic combinatorics related to the notions of shapes, shifted shapes, plane partitions, and hook length posets. They also play several roles in Lie theory and algebraic geometry related to -minuscule elements and Bruhat distributive lattices for simply laced general Weyl or Coxeter groups, and to -minuscule Schubert varieties. This paper presents a classification of d-complete posets which is indexed by Dynkin diagrams.     

The mass of 29S

the mass of ²⁹S has been measured with the ³²S(τ, ⁶He) reaction at 70 MeV. The mass excess is ?3.16 ± 0.05 MeV.
