The measurement in thermal equilibrium of the vacancy contribution to the residual resistivity of metals has posed certain
difficulties. The recent experiment of Celasco and co-workers represents a new, powerful approach to this problem, via the
measurement of the power spectrum of the voltage noise generated by resistivity fluctuations. The latter originate in vacancy
number fluctuations. We develop a theory for the power spectrum, incorporating three basic features. Vacancies can be annihilated
in the material and they diffuse. Grain boundaries act as sources and sinks for vacancies. Both annihilation (a form of reaction)
and diffusion are noisy processes. We therefore set up and solve a reactive-diffusive stochastic equation for the instantaneous
density, with appropriatefinite boundary conditions. Assuming for simplicity that the grains are spherical, the power spectrum is evaluated exactly, in closed
form. A detailed comparison with experiment is made. The physical origins of different time scales in the problem and the
consequent frequency regimes in the power spectrum are analysed. Recognising the very general applicability of our theory,

We investigate whether narrative disclosures in 10-K and 10K-405 filings contain value-relevant information for predicting market performance. We apply text classification techniques from computer science to machine code text disclosures in a sample of 4280 filings by 1236 firms over five years. Our methodology develops a model using documents and actual performance for a training sample. This model, when applied to documents from a test set, leads to performance prediction. We find that a portfolio based on model predictions earns significantly positive size-adjusted returns, indicating that narrative disclosures contain value-relevant information. Supplementary analyses show that the text classification model captures information not contained in document-level features of clarity, tone and risk sentiment considered in prior research. However, we find that the narrative score is not providing information incremental to traditional predictors such as size, market-to-book and momentum, but rather affects investors’ use of price momentum as a factor that predicts excess returns. 相似文献

Chiral oxazaborolidines derived from (1S,2R)-(+)-norephedrine and substituted salicylaldehydes were employed in the asymmetric reduction of prochiral ketones using borane dimethyl sulfide as a reducing agent. The secondary alcohols were formed in excellent yields (45–99.8%) with enantioselectivities up to 99.8%. We report on the first systematic study of spin transport in bilayer graphene (BLG) as a function of mobility, minimum conductivity, charge density, and temperature. The spin-relaxation time τ(s) scales inversely with the mobility μ of BLG samples both at room temperature (RT) and at low temperature (LT). This indicates the importance of D'yakonov-Perel' spin scattering in BLG. Spin-relaxation times of up to 2 ns at RT are observed in samples with the lowest mobility. These times are an order of magnitude longer than any values previously reported for single-layer graphene (SLG). We discuss the role of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that could lead to the dominance of D'yakonov-Perel' spin scattering in BLG. In comparison to SLG, significant changes in the carrier density dependence of τ(s) are observed as a function of temperature. 相似文献

We report a Rashba spin splitting of a two-dimensional electron gas in the topological insulator Bi(2)Se(3) from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We further demonstrate its electrostatic control, and show that spin splittings can be achieved which are at least an order-of-magnitude larger than in other semiconductors. Together these results show promise for the miniaturization of spintronic devices to the nanoscale and their operation at room temperature. 相似文献

The flow boiling phenomenon over a heated tube restricted by an interference sleeve, which is a passive enhancement technique, has been analysed using a semi-empirical approach. The liquid boiled was water flowing through an annular cross-section. A model developed earlier for the case of pool boiling over porous surfaces has been adapted after modification to pool boiling with interference surfaces using equivalent geometrical parameters and a modified permeability factor. This was further extended to saturated flow boiling situation using an additive mechanism. The single phase heat transfer coefficient required for the additive mechanism is obtained from an experimental correlation developed in the present study. The suppression factors evaluated for the eight sleeve geometries used in the present investigation are expressed in terms of the single phase Reynolds number and the Martinelli parameter. Very good agreement was observed between the model predictions and experimental data validating the mechanisms postulated. Further, a purely empirical correlation based on the present experimental data has been proposed to estimate the two-phase heat transfer coefficient. While the empirical correlation shows a better fit with the experimental data, the additive model has a physical basis. 相似文献

Gupta and Livne (1988) modified Nash’s (1950) original bargaining problem through the introduction of a reference point restricted to lie in the bargaining set. Additionally, they characterized a solution concept for this augmented bargaining problem. We propose and axiomatically characterize a new solution concept for bargaining problems with a reference point: the Tempered Aspirations solution. In Kalai and Smorodinsky (1975), aspirations are given by the so called ideal or utopia point. In our setting, however, the salience of the reference point mutes or tempers the negotiators’ aspirations. Thus, our solution is defined to be the maximal feasible point on the line segment joining the modified aspirations and disagreement vectors. The Tempered Aspirations solution can be understood as a “dual” version of the Gupta-Livne solution or, alternatively, as a version of Chun and Thomson’s (1992) Proportional solution in which the claims point is endogenous. We also conduct an extensive axiomatic analysis comparing the Gupta-Livne to our Tempered Aspirations solution. 相似文献
