Multivariable identification and controller design of an integrated flight control system

This paper investigates the multivariable identification and controller design for the longitudinal channel of a Boeing 747 transport. The transfer function matrix of the system is identified using the prediction error (PE) identification method with multivariable ARX model. An ellipsoidal parametric uncertainty set is constructed from the covariance matrix of the identified parameters. It contains the parameters of actual system at a certain probability level. The identified models and the associated uncertainty sets are validated by measuring the worst-case ν-gap and then compared with the maximum value of the generalized stability margin. In automatic flight control system or autopilots, multiple specifications criteria are needed to be satisfied concurrently, such as good holding (small static altitude holding error), fast response, smooth transition (less oscillation, overshoot). The design of a Multiple Simultaneous Specifications (MSS) controller effectively and practically is a very significant and challenging job. Liu and Mills [H.H.T. Liu, J.K. Mills, Multiple specification design in flight control system, in: Proceedings of the American Control Conference, Chicago, Illinois, 2000, pp. 1365–1369] proposed a MSS controller design method using a convex combination approach. In this paper, we apply the method [H.H.T. Liu, J.K. Mills, Multiple specification design in flight control system, in: Proceedings of the American Control Conference, Chicago, Illinois, 2000, pp. 1365–1369; H.H.T. Liu, Design combination in integrated flight control, in: Proceedings of the American Control Conference, Arlington, Virginia, 2001, pp. 494–499; H.H.T. Liu, Multi-objective design for an integrated flight control system: a combination with model reduction approach, in: Proceedings of IEEE International Symposium on Computer Aided Control System Design, Glasgow, 2002, pp. 21–26] to design a MSS controller based on the identified models of the Boeing 747 transport aircraft longitudinal channel. The controllers are also validated by simulation using the true plant transfer functions.     

Scanning mirror on a vibrating membrane for dynamic optical trapping

A study of the variation of the spectral shape and the harmonic distribution of the high-order harmonics generated from silver plasma on the frequency chirp of the driving laser radiation (793 nm 48 fs) is reported. The results of the systematic study of the harmonic generation from the 21st order up to the 61st order (λ=13 nm) are presented. A tuning of the harmonic wavelength up to 0.8 nm can be accomplished by variation of the laser chirp. PACS 42.65.Ky; 42.79.Nv; 52.38.Mf     

Multiferroic TbMnO3 nanoparticles

We report on the synthesis of TbMnO₃ nanoparticles by chemical co-precipitation route and their structural, chemical bonding, magnetic and dielectric properties. It is shown that the interesting multiferroic properties of this system as reflected by the concurrent occurrence of magnetic and dielectric transitions are retained in the nanoparticles (size∼40 nm). However, the nanoparticle constitution and properties are seen to depend significantly on the calcination temperature. While the nanoparticles obtained by calcination at 800 °C correspond very well with the reported properties of single phase TbMnO₃ (all the key magnetic and dielectric features near 7, 27 and 41 K, albeit with reduced dielectric constant) the nanoparticles obtained by calcination at 900 °C develop a Tb deficient skin which softens the transitions, reducing the dielectric constant further.     

Determination of total inorganic iodine in seawater by cathodic stripping square wave voltammetry

A method has been designed for the reduction of iodate to iodide in seawater and subsequent determination of total dissolved iodine as iodide by cathodic stripping square wave voltammetry. The pH of the sample is lowered to about 1-2 and iodate is reduced to iodide with sodium sulfite under this acidic condition. The pH of the sample is then raised to 8-9 before the concentration of iodide is measured.     

Quantitative characterization of chaotic instabilities in semiconductors

A method for quantitative characterization of chaotic dynamical systems is discussed. An electronic instrument for determining the number of independent variablesk ^*, involved in the motion, is described. It allows one to obtain these in real time from a single observable. The suggested technique has been applied to quantification of strange attractors underlying chaotic instabilities in semi-insulating GaAsCr, and n-Ge, irradiated with high energy electrons. In n-Ge, for instance, the measured numbersk ^* range from 2 to 4 depending on control parameters. These measurements reveal the highly deterministic nature of the observed chaotic oscillations. The physical mechanisms responsible for the current instabilities and chaotic behaviour are discussed.     

Two synthetic approaches to rebeccamycin

Two synthetic approaches to a new indolocarbazole antitumor antibiotic, rebeccamycin, were developed. The absolute configuration of rebeccamycin was determined by a total synthesis.     

Enzymatic synthesis of 7-deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic acid and 7-O-methyl-N-acetylneuraminic acid

7-Deoxy-N-acetylneuraminic Acid and 7-O-methyl-N-acetylneuraminic acid were synthesized through the sialic acid aldolase-catalyzed aldol addition reactions of 4-deoxy-N-acetyl-D-mannosamine and 4-O-methyl-N-acetyl-D-mannosamine, respectively, with pyruvate. The obtained sialic acids will be used as probes for the investigation of the unusual mechanism of a novel sialidase from leech.
