There is an increasing body of experimental information suggesting that very thin films of materials, normally considered to be metals, exhibit behavior characteristic of a nonmetal. In almost all cases, there is a nonmetal-to-metal transition as a function of film density or thickness, frequently accompanied by a structural transition. Amazingly, this behavior seems to occur for metal films on metal substrates, as well as for metals on semiconductors. The identification of this phenomena and the subsequent explanation has been slow in developing, due to the inability to directly measure the conductivity of a submonolayer film. This paper will discuss the evidence accumulated from variety of spectroscopic experimental techniques for three systems: a Mott-Hubbard transition, a Peierls-like distortion, and a Wilson transition. 相似文献

High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on an optimally doped cuprate Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ). The momentum-dependent energy and linewidth of an A1 optical phonon were obtained. Based on these data as well as detailed knowledge of the electronic structure, we developed a scheme to determine the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) matrix element related to a specific phonon mode. Plasma physics is a very mature field, studied extensively for well over a century. The cross-disciplinary field of plasmonics (electromagnetics of metallic nanostructures), on the other hand, with its potential for an extraordinary light control through novel class of materials and the resulting applications, has become very fashionable only recently. Inevitably, as a result of this rapid development, the deep connections with the mother discipline, the plasma physics, have sometimes been overlooked. The goal of this work is to review some of these basic connections, which are relevant, and ultimately helpful for researchers in the new field. We focus on the solid-state structured plasmas and address the issue of classical versus quantum treatments. We discuss the little known subtleties of the surface plasmons at metallic surfaces (e.g. multipole plasmons) and their consequences on plasmonics of the textured metallic films. Plasmonics of nanoparticles has been preceded by studies of plasma effects in metallic clusters and semiconducting quantum dots (QDs). In this context, we discuss the little known connection between the Mie resonance in metallic particles and the collective resonance in wide parabolic quantum wells (QWs) and QDs. Researchers dealing with plasmonics of thin films can benefit from earlier studies of plasmons in the semiconductor modulation doped heterojunctions and QWs, with its rich spectrum of intersubband and two-dimensional plasmons. In non-equilibrium plasmonic systems, generation of plasmons can be stimulated, leading to the exciting possibility of the plasmon instability. Extraordinarily complex is the plasmonics of carbon nanotubes and graphene, with its numerous van Hove, one- and three-dimensional plasmons, and we discuss how the plasmonics of metamaterials can benefit from this complexity. Finally, we discuss a few applications, which could directly benefit from plasmonics, including medical and the novel class of solar cells. 相似文献

The relationships between the elastic moduli, glass forming ability and response to deformation of bulk metallic glasses are investigated. Five bulk metallic glasses are prepared from high purity elements via suction casting. The results confirm that there exists a correlation between energy absorbed to failure during compression testing and the bulk to shear modulus ratio. This finding is developed such that it corresponds only to the elastic component of energy absorption, and that the bulk modulus dominates this. Plastic deformation appears to be favored by a reduced shear modulus, although it shows greater dependence on structural features that are frozen in during the glass transition, and so may well be dependent on the liquid fragility. 相似文献
