Modification of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene by low-temperature plasma (review)

Published data appeared in the last decade on the modification of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films and plates with the use of low-temperature plasma are considered. Setups for sample processing by discharges of various types and methods for studying the changes occurring on the polymer surface are described. The results of the examination of contact, adhesion, strength, and tribological properties are presented. Changes in the chemical composition and structure of UHMWPE films are discussed, and data on the metabolic activity of the modified films are presented.     

Synthesis of N-glycyl-β-glycopyranosyl amines,derivatives of natural oligosaccharides — glucose analogs of Lex antigen

Treatment of the natural tri-, tetra-, and pentasaccharides, β-d-Galp-(1→4)-[α-l-Fucp-(1→3)]-d-Glcp, α-l-Fucp-(1→2)-β-d-Galp-(1→4)-[α-l-Fucp-(1→3)]-d-Glcp, and α-l-Fucp-(1→2)-[α-d-GalNAcp-(1→3)]-β-d-Galp-(1→4)-[α-l-Fucp-(1→3)]-d-Glcp, which are glucose analogs of Le^x, with ammonium carbamate in aqueous methanol gave the corresponding β-glycopyranosyl amines. After their N-acylation with N-Z-glycine N-hydroxysuccinimidyl ester (Z is benzyloxycarbonyl) with subsequent hydrogenolytic removal of Z-group, corresponding N-glycyl-β-glycopyranosyl amines were obtained in yields up to 70%.

The adhesive properties of polyfluoroolefin films modified by direct-current discharge

The influence of the treatment of various structures polyfluoroolefine films by the direct-current discharge at the anode and cathode on the properties of the surface (the value of the contact angles of wettability, work of adhesion, and surface energy and its polar and dispersive components) is studied. Measurements of the peel strength of plasma-treated films are conducted. It is shown that the direct-current discharge treatment makes it possible to substantially increase the peel strength of the polyfluoroolefin films.     

The effect of direct-current discharge treatment on the surface properties of a poly(1-(trimethylsilyl)-1-propyne) membrane

The effect of treatment in low-pressure direct-current discharge on the surface properties of poly(1-trimethylsilyl)-1-propyne) membranes was investigated by the goniometric technique. It was shown that the treatment of the membranes at the anode makes it possible to significantly improve their contact properties (to increase the hydrophilicity of the surface). The structure of the membranes before and after plasma treatment was examined by means of Fourier-transform IR reflection spectroscopy. In addition, the sorption of ethanol onto the plasma-treated and untreated membranes was studied with the use of this technique in the transmission mode and it was assumed that it proceeds via different mechanisms, a behavior that can be due to a change in the free volume of the polymer or the formation of a surface charge on the membrane as a result of plasma treatment.     

Crank–Nicolson Scheme for Abstract Linear Systems

This paper studies the Crank–Nicolson discretization scheme for abstract differential equations on a general Banach space. We show that a time-varying discretization of a bounded analytic C₀-semigroup leads to a bounded discrete-time system. On Hilbert spaces, this result can be extended to all bounded C₀-semigroups for which the inverse generator generates a bounded C₀-semigroup. The presentation is based on C₀-semigroup theory and uses a functional analysis approach.     

Surface modification of vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer films by direct-current discharge treatment

Changes in the contact properties of the surface of a vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer film by dc discharge treatment were studied. It was found that the modification considerably improved the contact properties of the films because of the appearance of oxygen-containing polar groups on the polymer surface. The formation of these groups was detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy.
