Stereoselective synthesis of sitophilate and sitophilure

Synthesis of sitophilate 6, the male-produced aggregation pheromone of the granary weevil, has been achieved with an overall yield of 46% from 1 in high enantiomeric and diastereomeric purity. From sitophilate, sitophilure 8, aggregation pheromone of the rice weevil and maize weevil, was prepared in a four-step synthesis without any racemization.     

Straightforward microwave-assisted synthesis of 2-thiazolines using Lawesson's reagent under solvent-free conditions

2-Thiazolines are synthesized from carboxylic acids and 1,2-aminoalcohols in the presence of Lawesson's reagent under solventless conditions. The developed method is valid for either substituted or unsubstituted aminoalcohols and a wide variety of aromatic, heteroaromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids; thus it constitutes a general synthetic method for these kinds of compounds. The role of Lawesson's reagent is dual: to transform the 1,2-aminoalcohol into 1,2-aminothiol and to activate its reaction with the carboxylic acid leading to the formation of a thiazoline ring, all in one pot.     

Polycyclic hydroxyquinones-xix : Regiospecific synthesis of anthracyclinones via the diels-alder reaction with dichloronaphthazarins

A convenient route to the daunomycinone precursor 18via a succession of Diels-Alder reactions from 2,7-dichloronaphthazarin (9) is described. In a similar manner, starting from 2,6-dichloronaphthazarin (19) compound 20, a regioisomer of 18,is synthesized. This methodology constitutes a regiospecific approach to (±)-daunomycinone and related anthracyclinones.     

Trapping of a phosphazide intermediate in the Staudinger reaction of tertiary phosphines with azides and its application to the synthesis of analogs of the marine alkaloid midpacamide

A new method based on the reaction of an E-phosphazide, an intermediate in the Staudinger reaction between triphenylphosphine with an azide, with heterocumulenes allows the one-pot, two-component synthesis of a number of analogs of the pyrrole-imidazole marine alkaloid midpacamide. The procedure, which involves sequential treatment of the appropriate α-azido ester with triphenylphosphine and isothiocyanate leads to the thiohydantoin product after aqueous workup. The cyclization conditions can also be adapted to the synthesis of hydantoins by using isocyanates.     

Micellar effects on a ligand substitution reaction: Kinetics of the formation of [Fe(CN)5(μ‐pz)Ru(NH3)5]−, from [Fe(CN)5H2O]3− and [Ru(NH3)5pz]2+, in the presence of anionic micelles

The kinetics of substitution of H₂O by Ru(NH₃)₅pz²⁺ (pz = pyrazine) in Fe(CN)₅H₂O^3? have been studied in micellar aqueous solutions of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). Experimental results are discussed by using an approach based on the transition‐state theory. This approach is better than others based on the pseudophase model, which can also be used, because it is able to give a clear meaning to the parameters of the model. Trends in the observed reactivity are explained by a change in the degree of association of one of the reactants to the micelles (Ru(NH₃)₅pz²⁺ in the present work). This association is governed by an equilibrium constant that depends on the electrostatic potential at the surface of the micelles. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Capillary and slit-die flow of two liquid-crystalline polymers. The effect of pressure on viscosity

Viscosity measurements on two commercial thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) (a copolyester and a polyesteramide) were performed using both capillary and slit die methods. The results are in agreement with those presented in the literature for the same LCPs, when the measurements are carried out with a L/D = 30 die; these results are affected more by Bagley corrections for the polyesteramide than for the copolyester. For both LCPs, viscosities measured in the slit die are lower than those obtained by capillary rheometry. Nevertheless, the difference is much bigger in the case of the polyesteramide, for which a reduction by a factor of 3 is observed. This is not due to the preshear or thermal history, since the same piston-barrel system and thermal treatment were applied in both types of measurements. Depending on the polymer sample and temperature, concave and convex curvatures were observed in the pressure profiles during the slit flow. From these curvatures, the pressure coefficient α of viscosity was evaluated. However, in the case of the polyesteramide the convex curvature leads to a negative coefficient (the viscosity decreases with pressure, instead of increasing). This result may be explained by envisaging a change in the structure of the melt along the slit length. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Partial molal volumes for iron(II)-diimine complexes in water and in aqueous methanol

Summary Partial molal volumes of the perchlorate or chloride salts of several tris-diimine-iron(II) cations have been determined in aqueous and methanol-water solutions by vibrating-tube densimetry. Partial molal volumes of the cations at infinite dilution have been estimated for aqueous solution, and compared with values for related cations. Trends of limiting partial molal volumes for perchlorate salts in methanol-water media are compared with trends in transfer chemical potentials for the respective cations; both are discussed in terms of ligand-dependent preferential solvation behaviour.     

Stereochemistry of organic sulphur compounds: 12—Configurational assignment of 2-methylsulphinyl-1-phenylethanol and some O-derivatives

The conformational analysis of the diastereomeric 2-methylsulphinyl-1-phenylethanol and its O-methyl and O-acetyl derivatives has been performed by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The study of the influence of dilution and solvent polarity changes on the coupling constants has permitted the configurational assignment of each diastereoisomer. The role played by hydrogen bonding in the hydroxysulphoxides has also been studied by IR spectroscopy.
