Spin-resolved unoccupied electronic band structure from quantum size oscillations in the reflectivity of slow electrons from ultrathin ferromagnetic crystals

The spin-dependent reflectivity of electrons with energies between 0 and 20 eV from Fe single crystals 2-8 monolayers thick on a W(110) surface is studied by spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy. The quantum size oscillations in the reflectivity are analyzed in a similar manner as in photoemission of ground state electrons, yielding the spin-resolved unoccupied state band structure of Fe in the Gamma N direction in the energy range studied.     

Search for new heavy particles in the WZ0 final state in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV

We present the first general search for new heavy particles, X, which decay via X --> WZ0 --> e(nu)+jj as a function of M(X) and Gamma(X) in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. No evidence is found for production of X in 110 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. General cross section limits are set at the 95% C.L. as a function of mass and width of the new particle. The results are further interpreted as mass limits on the production of new heavy charged vector bosons which decay via W' --> WZ0 in an extended gauge model as a function of the width, Gamma(W'), and mixing factor between the W' and the standard model W bosons.     

Search for the scalar top quark in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV

We have performed a search for scalar top quark (stop) pair production in the inclusive electron-muon-missing transverse energy final state, using a sample of pp events corresponding to 108.3 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. For the dominant decays of the lightest stop, t-->b chi+1 and t-->blnu, no evidence for signal is found. We derive cross-section limits as a function of stop ( t ), chargino ( chi+1), and sneutrino ( nu) masses.     

Second Harmonic Power Generation from GaAs-Impatt Diodes at 210 GHz

Investigations of GaAs-IMPATT diodes as self-pumped frequency doublers are carried out both, theoretically and experimentally. Optimization criterions are specified and first experimental results are presented. 1 mW output power has been achieved in the harmonic mode at 210 GHz.     

Lattice distortions due to deuterium in niobium

The quasielastic diffuse scattering of neutrons from deuterium interstitials in niobium has been measured and compared to data calculated from a Kanzaki force model with central forces acting on nearest and next-nearest neighbours. It is found that the cubic symmetry of the long range distortion field of H in Nb is already established in the immediate neighbourhood of the defect.
