Increased strontium uptake in trabecular bone of ovariectomized calcium‐deficient rats treated with strontium ranelate or strontium chloride

Based on clinical trials showing the efficacy to reduce vertebral and non‐vertebral fractures, strontium ranelate (SrR) has been approved in several countries for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Hence, it is of special clinical interest to elucidate how the Sr uptake is influenced by dietary Ca deficiency as well as by the formula of Sr administration, SrR versus strontium chloride (SrCl₂). Three‐month‐old ovariectomized rats were treated for 90 days with doses of 25 mg kg^?1 d^?1 and 150 mg kg^?1 d^?1 of SrR or SrCl₂ at low (0.1% Ca) or normal (1.19% Ca) Ca diet. Vertebral bone tissue was analysed by confocal synchrotron‐radiation‐induced micro X‐ray fluorescence and by backscattered electron imaging. Principal component analysis and k‐means clustering of the acquired elemental maps of Ca and Sr revealed that the newly formed bone exhibited the highest Sr fractions and that low Ca diet increased the Sr uptake by a factor of three to four. Furthermore, Sr uptake in bone of the SrCl₂‐treated animals was generally lower compared with SrR. The study clearly shows that inadequate nutritional calcium intake significantly increases uptake of Sr in serum as well as in trabecular bone matrix. This indicates that nutritional calcium intake as well as serum Ca levels are important regulators of any Sr treatment.     

Internal kink instability during off-axis electron cyclotron current drive in the DIII-D tokamak

Experimental evidence is reported of an internal kink instability driven by a new mechanism: barely trapped suprathermal electrons produced by off-axis electron cyclotron heating on the DIII-D tokamak. It occurs in plasmas with an evolving safety factor profile q(r) when q(min) approaches 1. This instability is most active when ECCD is applied on the high field side of the flux surface. It has a bursting behavior with poloidal/toroidal mode number = m/n = 1/1. In positive magnetic shear plasmas, this mode becomes the fishbone instability. This observation can be qualitatively explained by the drift reversal of the barely trapped suprathermal electrons.     

(±)-trans,cis-4-Hydroxy-5,6-di-O-isopropylidenecyclohex-2-ene-1-one: synthesis and facile dimerization to decahydrodibenzofurans

An efficient synthesis of (±)-trans,cis-4-hydroxy-5,6-di-O-isopropylidenecyclohex-2-ene-1-one (3) has been developed from acetonide-protected meso-1,2-dihydrocatechol derivative 1 via photooxygenation, then Kornblum-DeLaMare rearrangement. The product is unstable unless its 4-hydroxy group is protected, as it undergoes facile dimerization in solution to a 1:1 mixture of diastereoisomeric decahydrodibenzofurans 8 and 9. A new synthesis of the dihydrocatechol 1 from 1,3-cyclohexadiene has also been developed.     

Hydrogen-deuterium exchange reactions catalyzed by zerovalent phosphinepalladium complexes

Complexes of the type [Pd(PR₃)_n] (n = 3 or 4), which may be conveniently generated in situ, catalyze hydrogen-deuterium exchange reactions between D₂O and various organic substrates, at ambient temperature. The reactions are most rapid for nitroalkanes, where exchange occurs exclusively at the C(1) position and allows the isolation of specifically deuterium-labeled compounds.     

Fourier Transform Spectroscopy of the A'(1)Pi-X(1)Sigma(+) System of CaO

The A'(1)Pi-X(1)Sigma(+) near-infrared system of CaO was observed for the first time at high resolution using a Fourier transform spectrometer. The A'(1)Pi-X(1)Sigma(+) chemiluminescence was excited in a Ca + N(2)O flame produced in a Broida-type oven. More than 3000 rotational lines, classified into 19 bands involving the A'(1)Pi 0 /= 2) levels with the nearby b(3)Sigma(+) (v-2) levels has been detected. An extended set of A'(1)Pi (v = 0-3) data has been obtained which is suitable for use in a future multistate deperturbation analysis of the a(3)Pi approximately A'(1)Pi approximately b(3)Sigma(+) approximately A(1)Sigma(+) complex of excited states. The new near-infrared spectra of the A'(1)Pi-X(1)Sigma(+) transition of CaO also permits the first direct high-resolution linkage between the orange and green systems and the near-infrared bands.
