Spectroscopic and atomic force microscopy investigations of hybrid materials composed of fullerenes and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane

Fullerene based materials may open a new horizon in many fields of science. In this study we fabricated thin films of the hybrid materials formed as a result of interactions between C₆₀ fullerenes and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The deposition technique was a combination of spin-coating and evaporation methods. Interactions within the films were investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). Surface morphology was measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). We found that there are strong chemical reactions between the nucleophilic nitrogen atoms from APTMS and electrophilic fullerene molecules. Results of NEXAFS investigations suggest that due to direct interactions between APTMS and C₆₀ the electronic structure of the fullerene molecules changes while at the same time AFM proved that the C₆₀ molecule diameter is not altered.     

Isomeric states in 214Th and 213Th

Isomeric states in ²¹⁴Th and ²¹³Th were identified by means of γ -rays measured in delayed coincidence with the implanted evaporation residues. These were produced in irradiations of ¹⁶⁴Dy with ⁵⁴Cr projectiles and separated in-flight by the velocity filter SHIP. An isomeric state of I ^π = 8⁺ with a half-life of (1.24±0.12) μs was identified in ²¹⁴Th . The configuration π[1h _9/2 ⊗ 2f _7/2] was assigned to this state. An isomeric state with a half-life of (1.4±0.4) μs was observed in ²¹³Th . Tentatively it was assigned to an I ^π = 13/2⁺ state.     

New excited superdeformed bands in heavy Pb nuclei: Clue for an octupole softness near the N = 118 gap at large deformation

We report the identification of six new superdeformed (SD) bands in ^197,198Pb observed with the EUROBALL IV spectrometer. The results are interpreted in the framework of cranked Hartree-Fock calculations with approximate projection on the particle number by means of the Lipkin-Nogami method. A mixing between quasi-particle excitations and an octupole vibration is suggested in the two SD isotopes. We have estimated the ordering of the neutron valence orbitals and confirm indirectly a N = 118 SD gap. Received: 20 December 2000 / Accepted: 24 January 2001

Non-ohmic behaviour of iodine-doped polyacetylene

We report on the temperature and electric field strength dependence of the conductivity of iodine-doped polyacetylene in the metallic regime. The experimental results are discussed in terms of Sheng model of fluctuation induced tunneling and characteristic dimensions of the tunneling zones between fibres are deduced from a fit between this theory and our experiments.
