EFFECT OF PSORALEN AND NEAR UV ON VERTEBRATE CELLS IN CULTURE: COMPARISON OF LASER WITH STANDARD LAMP

Abstract. 4'-Aminoethyl-4,5',8-trimethylpsoralen, a DNA photoreagent, was used in conjunction with near UV light to modify cell growth and morphology. Since near UV radiation is needed to trigger the photoreactions, various doses of classical and laser near UV light were exposed to cells growing in media containing psoralen. It was found that near UV light caused a reduction in cell viability as indicated by complete inhibition of growth. The specificity of psoralens for nucleic acids was also investigated by using a tritium labeled psoralen derivative and tracing its appearance in different fractions of DNA from treated and untreated cells.     

Biodistribution of A14C-and99mTc-labeled N-substituted nitrosourea (CCNU) in an animal tumor model

One formulation of¹⁴C labeled and another of^99mTc labeled 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3-cyclohexyl-1-nitrosourea (CCNU) were administered i.v. to tumor (glioma) bearing rats. The radiopharmacokinetics of¹⁴C-CCNU were followed up to 24 hours post injection. On a per organ basis the blood, liver, small bowel, kidney cortex and muscle contained most of the activity. Optimum tumor to organ ratios occurred at 4–12 hours. The^99mTc-CCNU biodistribution was determined at 4 hours and compared to^99mTc-NaTcO₄. Tumor capsule to brain (29.5) and to muscle (10.59) ratios suggest^99mTc-CCNU to be a potential tumor seeking agent. Funded in part by USPHS Grant RR-05486-12.     

Fractal properties of the singular function s(u)

The function s(u) arising in the study of long primitive BCH codes over GF(q) is reviewed. The set of points 0 < u 1 such that q ^ku has a modulo 1 representation in the interval [a, 1] for every integer k 0 is shown to have Hausdorff dimension s(a) for every 0 a 1. Berlekamp's conjecture on the dimension of a set of points at which s fails to be differentiable is also proved.

Singular-value decomposition and boron NMR spectra in glass

We have applied the method of singular-value decomposition to the analysis of boron NMR spectra in glass. This procedure, which is useful for handling least-squares problems, clearly shows that there are a large number of solutions to any boron NMR spectral analysis problem. This limits the technique as a structure tool.
