Optically pumped cw CH2DOH fir laser: New lines and frequency measurements

We have measured the output powers and relative polarizations of 66 cw FIR laser lines from CH₂DOH (including 50 not previously reported), which were optically pumped by a CO₂ laser. The frequencies of 43 of these lines were measured relative to stabilized CO₂ lasers.     

STM characterisation of organic molecules on H-terminated Si(111)

We present the first high resolution STM images of organic molecules on the technological important hydrogen terminated silicon surface. Ordered layers of PTCDA and PTCDI were prepared on this surface by organic molecular beam epitaxy. The submolecular contrast of these molecules on Si(111)/H obtained in the high resolution images agrees with the corresponding images on HOPG and MoS₂ substrates.     

A determination of quark weak couplings at petra energies

Data on hadron production by e⁺e^? annihilation at c.m. energies between 12 and 36.6 GeV have been collected using the JADE detector. They have been analysed in terms of single-photon and weak neutral-current exchange assuming production of quark-antiquark pairs with only d, u, s, c and b quarks to produce values for the quark weak neutral-current couplings. A further analysis in terms of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg theory produced the result, sin²θ_{W = 0.22 ± 0.08}. The theory has therefore been tested in a new energy domain and within the context of the neutral weak couplings of the first, second and third generation quarks.     

Non-Liouville numbers and a Theorem of Hörmander

It is shown in this paper that Theorem 1 of [G. H. Meisters, “Translation-invariant linear forms and a formula for the Dirac measure,” J. Functional Analysis 8 (1971), 173–188] can be deduced from a very general result of Lars Hörmander, namely, Theorem 1 of “Generators for some rings of analytic functions” [Bull. Amer. Math. Soc.73 (1967), 943–949]. However, Hörmander's theorem is evidently not applicable in several other cases where Meisters'-type results have been obtained (e.g., Theorem 1 of G.H. Meisters and Wolfgang M. Schmidt, “Translation-invariant linear forms on L²(G) for compact abelian groups G,” J. Functional Analysis11 (1972), 407–424).     

Calculation of the carrier concentration dependence of the Auger lifetime in degenerate n-type (Hg,Cd)Te

The Auger 1 lifetime expression for degenerate n-type (Hg_1?xCd_x)Te has been derived by replacing the Fermi-Dirac distribution functions for the pair of Auger collision electrons with step functions. The lifetime is calculated as a function of carrier concentration, _n0 for several values of energy gap and temperature using a non-parabolic band structure. We find that for strong degeneracy, the lifetime, τ_AlsuD varies as n₀^?γ where 0.7 ?γ? 1 and that γ is dependent upon the energy gap. The relatively slow dependence of τ_Al^D upon n₀, compared to the non-degenerate case () is due to the dependence of τ_Al on the threshold energy which for the degenerate case is a linear function of the Fermi energy, hence, a function of n₀.     

Modular variables in quantum theory

The non-local aspects of interaction between quantum systems are investigated. These aspects are particularly conspicuous in quantum phenomena without a classical analog, such as the quantum effects of electromagnetic potentials. The study of the potential effect leads to the introduction of a new type of dynamical variable, the modular variable, which brings out the physical features of quantum mechanical non-locality.The material contained in this article is based on work done in the period 1965–67. Results from DASP one + e − annihilation between 3.1 and 5.2 GeV

This paper summarizes the measurements one ⁺ e ^? annihilation performed by the DASP Collaboration in the energy range between 3.1 and 5.2 GeV. The following topics are covered: total cross section, production and two body decays of the narrow resonances, radiative decays of theJ/ψ and ψ′ resonances and evidence for theX(2.82), ψ′ cascade decays, inclusive η production and evidence for theF meson, semileptonic decays of charmed mesons and properties of the heavy lepton.
