Liquid analysis dielectric capillary barrier discharge

In this study a simple micro-tube-based system for analysis of metal-containing liquids is introduced and its analytical performance is evaluated. It is based on a miniaturised dielectric barrier discharge driven at atmospheric pressure. The emission lines of various elements are observed. The system is developed for quantitative measurements and the limits of detection are determined. Because of very low flow rates of just μL min⁻¹ the approach requires extremely low sample volumes.     

Stability of Liquid Layers on Solid Materials

For a class of disjoining pressure potentials the existence of stable liquid layers on solid surfaces is studied. In some cases of solid configurations with simple geometries explicit results are obtained, in particular for a single cylindrical or spherical cavity. No smallness for the thickness of the layer is assumed.     

Theoretical construction of stable traversable wormholes

It is shown in this paper that it is possible, at least in principle, to construct a traversable wormhole that is stable to linearized radial perturbations by specifying relatively simple conditions on the shape and redshift functions.     

Synthesis and modeling study of (2S,5R,6R)- and (2S,5R,6S)-6-hydroxy- 8-(1-decynyl)-benzolactam-V8 as protein kinase C modulators

[structures: see text] Both (2S,5R,6R)- and (2S,5R,6S)-6-hydroxy-8-(1-decynyl)benzolactam-V8 were designed and synthesized as PKC modulators. Biological assays reveal the (6R)-ligand to be 20-fold more potent than its (6S)-counterpart in binding to PKC alpha.     

Integramides A and B, two novel non-ribosomal linear peptides containing nine C(alpha)-methyl amino acids produced by fungal fermentations that are inhibitors of HIV-1 integrase

Integramides A and B are two novel 16-mer linear peptides rich in C(alpha)-methyl amino acids that were isolated from fungal extracts of Dendrodochium sp. by employing a bioassay-guided isolation procedure using recombinant HIV-1 integrase. The structure and stereochemistry were elucidated by a combination of 2D NMR and ESI- and FAB-MS including MS/MS studies and by Marfey's method. Integramides A and B inhibited the coupled reaction of HIV-1 integrase with IC50 values of 17 and 10 microM, respectively.     

Ferrocene-containing carbohydrate dendrimers

Aliphatic amines, incorporating one or three (branched) acylated beta-D-glucopyranosyl residues, were coupled with the acid chloride of ferrocenecarboxylic acid and with the diacid chloride of 1,1'-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid to afford four dendrimer-type, carbohydrate-coated ferrocene derivatives in good yields (54-92%). Deprotection of the peracylated beta-D-glucopyranosyl residues was achieved quantitatively by using Zemplén conditions, affording four water-soluble ferrocene derivatives. When only one of the two cyclopentadienyl rings of the ferrocene unit is substituted, strong complexes are formed with beta-cyclodextrin in H2O, as demonstrated by liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry (LSIMS), 1H NMR spectroscopy, electrochemical measurements, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Molecular dynamics calculations showed that the unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl ring is inserted through the cavity of the toroidal host in these complexes. The electrochemical behavior of the protected and deprotected ferrocene-containing dendrimers was investigated in acetonitrile and water, respectively. The diffusion coefficient decreases with increasing molecular weight of the compound. The potential for oxidation of the ferrocene core, the rate constant of heterogeneous electron transfer, and the rate constant for the energy-transfer reaction with the luminescent excited state of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complex (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) are strongly affected by the number (one or two) of substituents and by the number (one or three) of carbohydrate branches present in the substituents. These effects are assigned to shielding of the ferrocene core by the dendritic branches. Electrochemical evidence for the existence of different conformers for one of the dendrimers in aqueous solution was obtained.     

Enantioselective formation of a dynamic hydrogen-bonded assembly based on the chiral memory concept

In this paper, we report the enantioselective formation of a dynamic noncovalent double rosette assembly 1a(3).(CYA)(6) composed of three 2-pyridylcalix[4]arene dimelamines (1a) and six butylcyanuric acid molecules (BuCYA). The six 2-pyridyl functionalities of the assembly interact stereoselectively with chiral dicarboxylic acids 3a-e via two-point hydrogen-bonding interactions. One of the two enantiomeric assemblies (P- or M-) 1a(3).(CYA)(6) is formed in excess as the result of the complexation of the chiral diacids, resulting in formation of optically active assemblies. The complexations with dibenzoly tartaric acids D-3a and L-3a (3 equivalent), respectively, leading to the formation of diastereomeric assemblies (P)-1a(3).(BuCYA)(6).(D-3a)(3) and (M)-1a(3).(BuCYA)(6).(L-3a)(3) with 90% diastereomeric excess. The diastereomeric excess in (M)-1a(3).(BuCYA)(6).(L-3a)(3) is "memorized" when L-3a is removed by precipitation with ethlylenediamine (EDA). The assembly (M)-1a(3).(BuCYA)(6) is still optically active (90% enantiomeric excess), although none of its individual components are chiral. (M)-1a(3).(BuCYA)(6) has a high kinetic stability toward racemization (E(a) = 119 kJ mol(-)(1), half-life of (M)-1a(3).(BuCYA)(6) is ca. 1 week at 20 degrees C).
