Orbital control of stereochemistry in acid-catalysed addition reactions of endo -tricyclo[3.2.1.02,4]0ct-6-ene

The reaction of endo-tricyclo[3.2.1.0^2,4]oct-6-ene 1 with methanol in the presence of catalytic amounts of toluene-p-sulphonic acid has been shown to give 2-exo- and endo-methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-ene (2c) and (2d) and 2-endo-methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-6-ene (13). The formation of 2-exo- methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-ene (2c), the major product of reaction, has been probed by deuterium labelling experiments and a series of 6-exo-7-exo- dideuterobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-enes synthesised for ²H, ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectral analysis in order unambiguously to determine the stereochemistry of proton attack on endo-tricyclo[3.2.1 0^2,4]oct-6-ene (1). The formation of 2-exo-methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-ene (2c) has been determined to involve corner protonation of the cyclopropyl moiety and skeletal rearrangement to an allylic cation with a small but measurable memory effect     

Precise and accurate determination of the stoichiometry of CuInS2 semiconductor material by electrochemical methods

Summary CuInS₂ is one of the important I–III–VI₂ ternary compounds which has in recent years received increasing interest in semiconductor science. In this study an electrochemical method has been developed based on a limited amount of available sample (0.5–10mg) for the precise and accurate determination of CuInS₂ composition. After decomposition of the sample in concentrated HNO₃ under pressure, copper and indium were sequentially determined by constant potential coulometry, and sulfur (as sulfate) by amperometric titration. Various experimental parameters which ensure high precision and accuracy of the results were carefully evaluated and calibrated. The overall errors for the determination of copper, indium and sulfur in a 10 mg sample were found to be +0.10%, –0.12% and +0.16%, respectively, which fullfills the requirement for accurate stoichiometric assessment.

Aquaporin-11: A channel protein lacking apparent transport function expressed in brain

Background  

The aquaporins are a family of integral membrane proteins composed of two subfamilies: the orthodox aquaporins, which transport only water, and the aquaglyceroporins, which transport glycerol, urea, or other small solutes. Two recently described aquaporins, numbers 11 and 12, appear to be more distantly related to the other mammalian aquaporins and aquaglyceroporins.     

Determination of metoprolol enantiomers in human urine by GC-MS using (−)-α-methoxy-α-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetyl chloride as a chiral derivatizing agent

Summary A method for the assay of R-(+)- and S-(−)- metoprolol in human urine has been developed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The method involved purification by liquid-liquid extraction and derivatization with N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide to form an O-silyl ether, followed by subsequent chiral derivatization with (−)-α-methoxy-α-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetyl chloride to form diastereomeric amide. The reaction was rapid and the diastereomeric derivatives were well resolved. Quantitation was performed by selected-ion monitoring of fragment ions of the diastereomers in electron impact ionization mode. No racemization was found during the reaction. The detection limit was 0.5 ng·mL⁻¹. The intra-day variation ranged between 0.38 and 7.86% in relation to the measured concentration and inter-day variation was 2.26–8.06%. The method has been applied to the determination of R-(+)-and S-(−)- metoprolol in human urine from healthy volunteers dosed with racemic metoprolol tartrate.     

Halogenated 3-pyridylketones

The oxidation of 2,6-dichloro-3-benzylpyridines and bis(2,6-dichloro-3-pyridyl)methanes, respectively, was accomplished using chromic trioxide in a highly acidic medium. The synthesis of several phenyl-3-(2,6-dichloropyridyl)ketones and of bis(2,6-dichloro-3-pyridyl)ketone are reported.     

Perturbed sites and host—guest—host exciton cascade in the biphenyl isotopic mixed crystal phosphorescence

An interesting energy cascade is observed in the phosphorescence spectra of 1% biphenyl-h₁₀ in biphenyl-d₁₀ (2–15 K); strongly perturbed host sites, with energy levels below that of the protonated guest, quench the guest sites at higher temperatures (11–15 K). The identification of the perturbed sites is based on vibrational characteristics (both intensity and frequency), obtained with the help of phosphorescence spectra of biphenyl-h₁₀ and biphenyl-d₁₀ in an argon matrix, indicating an isotope dependent vibronic structure. A partial vibrational analysis is presented, resulting in confirmation of the first triplet state of biphenyl as orbitally ungerade. The dynamics of the triplet excitation are discussed, including several possible mechanisms explaining the non-Boltzmann nature of the low-temperature steady state.     

Ab initio SCF Calculation of the Fluoronium Ion: Geometry,electronic structure and vibrational constants

An ab initio SCF calculation of 42 points of the energy hypersurface of the fluoronium ion is presented using a contracted F(5s/3p), H(2s) gaussian basis set. In its equilibrium structure a bond length of 1.812 a.u. and a HFH bond angle of 127.2° are predicted. The calculated vibrational frequencies for H₂F⁺, HDF⁺, and D₂F⁺ are in good agreement with the experimental data.
