Hydroformylation in fluorous solvents

The hydroformylation of long chain alkenes under fluorous biphase conditions and in neat perfluorocarbon solvents is reviewed. Special emphasis is placed upon the authors' evaluation of the steric and electronic influence of perfluoroalkylation on catalyst activity, regioselectivity and retention in the fluorocarbon phase.     

Effect of nanotube functionalization on the properties of single‐walled carbon nanotube/polyurethane composites

A commercially available aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane formulated with a methylene bis(cyclohexyl) diisocyanate hard segment and a poly(tetramethylene oxide) soft segment and chain‐extended with 1,4‐butanediol was dissolved in dimethylformamide and mixed with dispersed single‐walled carbon nanotubes. The properties of composites made with unfunctionalized nanotubes were compared with the properties of composites made with nanotubes functionalized to contain hydroxyl groups. Functionalization almost eliminated the conductivity of the tubes according to the conductivity of the composites above the percolation threshold. In most cases, functionalized and unfunctionalized tubes yielded composites with statistically identical mechanical properties. However, composites made with functionalized tubes did have a slightly higher modulus in the rubbery plateau region at higher nanotube fractions. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering patterns indicated that the dispersion reached a plateau in the unfunctionalized composites that was consistent with the plateau in the rubbery plateau region. The room‐temperature modulus and tensile strength increase was proportionally higher than almost all increases seen previously in thermoplastic polyurethanes; however, the increase was still an order of magnitude below what has been reported for the best nanotube–polymer systems. Nanotube addition increased the hard‐segment glass transition temperature slightly, whereas the soft‐segment glass transition was so diffuse that no conclusions could be drawn. Unfunctionalized tubes suppressed the crystallization of the hard segment; whereas functionalized tubes had no effect. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of temporary tethers in the meta photocycloaddition reaction

The use of temporary tethers in facilitating meta photocycloaddition reactions between phenol and allyl alcohol derivatives has been investigated. The merits of silicon, carbonate and methylene acetal tethers were assessed, whilst considering strategies for the preparation of the natural products gymnomitrol and gelsemine. The photoadducts were epoxidised, and then subjected to acid catalysed fragmentation with concomitant cleavage of the tether. Depending on whether water or methanol was used during the fragmentation stage of the methylene tethers, the methylene group was either removed altogether or transformed into a MOM group.     

New tri- and tetracyclic diterpenes from Euphorbia villosa

Three new tetracyclic diterpenes were isolated from the chloroform-soluble extract of Euphorbia villosa, together with one new and one known lathyrane diterpene. The structures were elucidated by means of various spectroscopic methods, including HREI-MS, HRFAB-MS, UV, and 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Spectral analyses revealed that two of the tetracyclic compounds contain the rare 5-6-6-4 fused ring system, while the third has a 5-6-7-3 fused diterpene core. Such diterpene skeletons have previously been found only in euphoractines A-E isolated from Euphorbia micractina. As a new structural feature, the diterpene framework described here has a C-2 epimer configuration. The new lathyrane diterpene is a diester of a hitherto unknown polyfunctional parent alcohol.     

Study of A+A collisions in NA49 at the CERN SPS

The NA49 experiment performed an energy scan of particle production in Pb+Pb collisions through the CERN SPS range. Observed features in the energy dependence of pion and strangeness production can so far only be described by a model assuming deconfinement to set in at the early stage of the reaction at the lower SPS energies.     

Frames and the Feichtinger conjecture

We show that the conjectured generalization of the Bourgain-Tzafriri restricted-invertibility theorem is equivalent to the conjecture of Feichtinger, stating that every bounded frame can be written as a finite union of Riesz basic sequences. We prove that any bounded frame can at least be written as a finite union of linearly independent sequences. We further show that the two conjectures are implied by the paving conjecture. Finally, we show that Weyl-Heisenberg frames over rational lattices are finite unions of Riesz basic sequences.

     

An abstract Szeg? theorem

Given a semi-group U(t) of bounded linear operators with bounded self-adjoint generator A we estimate the logarithm of the section determinants of U(t) in terms of A. When A is subject to an additional condition, which is related to so-called Følner sequences of orthogonal projections, this estimate implies a Szeg? type theorem for bounded, self-adjoint, and strictly positive operators. We show that the condition mentioned is satisfied when A is a Toeplitz operator or a compact operator.     

An Analogue of the Cramér–Lundberg Approximation in the Optimal Investment Case

We consider ruin probabilities for an insurance company, which can also invest in the stock market. The risk process is modeled by a compound Poisson process and the stock price by geometric Brownian motion. We show that if the tails of the claims are light tailed, then the optimal strategy is asymptotically given by holding a constant $-value in the stock position. Furthermore, we show that a kind of Cramér–Lundberg approximation holds for the minimal ruin probability. Everything is shown under assumptions, which are analogous to the assumptions in the case of the classical Cramér–Lundberg approximation without investment.     

Embedding partial Steiner triple systems so that their automorphisms extend

It is shown that there is a function g on the natural numbers such that a partial Steiner triple system U on u points can be embedded in a Steiner triple system V on ν points, in such a way that all automorphisms of U can be extended to V, for every admissible ν satisfying ν > g(u).
