A Raman study of polymerised C60

60 are reported. Although prepared according to different routes the Raman spectra of the two polymeric phases of C₆₀ show a quantitative agreement with respect to mode positions and intensity. We conclude from this that both materials have the same structure at least in the short range order, i.e. the same type of bonding and co-ordination between neighbouring C₆₀ molecules. An investigation of the time dependence of the thermal decomposition of high pressure polymerised C₆₀ is also presented. The rate of decomposition of the polymeric phase is found to be multi-exponential at all temperatures investigated. From an Arrhenius-type analysis of the short time data and the long time data, respectively, the activation energy for thermal dissociation of polymeric bonds was found to increase with time. On Clarkson's inequality,type and cotype for the Edmunds-Triebel logarithmic spaces

We show that the (p, p') Clarkson's inequality holds in the Edmunds-Triebel logarithmic spaces A_q(logA)_b,q A_{\theta}({\log}A)_{b,q} and in the Zygmund spaces L_p(logL)_b(W) L_p({\log}L)_b(\Omega) , for b ? \mathbbR b \in \mathbb{R} and for suitable 1 ￡ p ￡ 2 1 \leq p \leq 2 . As a consequence of these results we also obtain some new information about the types and the cotypes of these spaces.     

Maximum spin aligned states in 98 47Ag51

New excited states have been observed in the neutron deficient isotope ⁹⁸Ag following the ⁵⁸Ni+⁵⁰Cr →¹⁰⁸Te^* heavy–ion reaction. One of these states may be interpreted as a maximum spin aligned state of the πg_9/2 ⁻³νg_7/2 configuration. Other possible interpretations within the nuclear shell model are discussed as well. Bose-einstein correlations in the target fragmentation region in 200A GeV16O+nucleus collisions

Correlations between positive pions are investigated in the target fragmentation region of 200A GeV¹⁶O+nucleus collisions. The pions are measured with the Plastic Ball detector in the WA80 experiment at the CERN SPS. The target mass dependence of the radii and the correlation strength extracted by interferometry is studied. A new approach to the fit of the correlation function is introduced. The correlation strength and both invariant and transverse radii increase with decreasing target mass. The transverse radius for¹⁶O+C reactions appears to be much larger than the geometrical radius of the nuclei involved. For the Au target only a small fraction of the measured pions contributes to the apparent correlation. Hints for a much larger second component in¹⁶O+Au reactions are observed. Rescattering phenomena may provide a clue to understand these phenomena.     

Decay of the neutron-rich isotope 113Ru to 113Rh

The decay of neutron-rich isotope ¹¹³Ru obtained as on-line mass separated product of proton-induced fission has been investigated by γγ coincidence and spectrum multiscaling measurements. Decay schemes for both low- and high-spin isomers of ¹¹³Ru have been constructed. The level scheme of ¹¹³Rh is considerably extended. Systematics of the lowest-lying rhodium levels is smooth. The picture of shape coexistence established for neutron-rich Rh isotopes near-neutron midshell is confirmed with the observation of a K = 1/2 deformed band, with its 3/2⁺ state at 600 keV being the lowest-lying level and of probable 7/2⁺ and 5/2⁺ band members. A large fraction of β feeding is found to populate high-lying levels in ¹¹³Rh. The GT strength in ¹¹³Ru^m decay is significantly larger than for the decay of ¹¹³Ru_g and of lighter rhodium isotopes. Spectroscopy of neutron deficient 65Ge

Excited states of ⁶⁵Ge were populated via the ¹²C + ⁵⁸Ni (261 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction channel separation. On the basis of γγ-coincidence relations and angular distribution ratios a significantly extended level scheme was constructed up to E _x = 9 MeV and J ^π = (33/2^?). The low-energy states of the nucleus are discussed in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model.     

On Some Iterated Means Arising in Homogenization Theory

We consider iteration of arithmetic and power means and discuss methods for determining their limit. These means appear naturally in connection with some problems in homogenization theory.
