Structure of the O-Specific Polysaccharide of Hafnia Alvei 23 Having an Oligosaccharide-Phosphate Repeating Unit

ABSTRACT

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Hafnia alvei 23 has an acid-labile O-specific polysaccharide (OPS) with a pentasaccharide-phosphate repeating unit containing D-Glc1P, D-GlcNAc, L-Fuc, 6-deoxy-D-talose (D-6dTal), 4-acetamido-4,6-dideoxy-D-glucose (D-Qui4NAc), and an O-acetyl group. A partially degraded OPS was obtained by hydrolysis of LPS with 0.25 M sodium acetate in aqueous 0.5% acetic acid. Fractionation of LPS on Sephadex G-200 in DOC buffer allowed isolation of long-chain LPS species which, together with OPS, were studied by methylation analysis, chemical degradations (O-deacetylation, dephosphorylation with 48% hydrofluoric acid, Smith degradation), and ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, including 2D COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, and H-detected ¹H,¹³C heteronuclear single-quantum coherence (HSQC) experiments. The following structure of the repeating unit of OPS was established:     

Spontaneous generation of chirality and chiroptical spectra of N-nitroso-2,4-diaryl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonanes

The crystal structures of several bicyclic N-nitrosamines indicate that they crystallize in the chiral (Sohncke) space group P2₁2₁2₁ as conglomerates. This allows the resolution of these compounds by manual picking of the enantiomorphous crystals. The optical activity of the single crystals was confirmed by their CD spectra taken in KBr disks. The absolute configurations of the title nitrosamines were assigned by crystallographic measurements and by a comparison of their CD spectra with those of a reference compound resolved by classical methods. The observed Cotton effect signs, corresponding to the n–π¹ transition, were correlated with the helicity of the inherently chiral nitrosamine chromophore.     

Simplified model for mass diffusivity estimation based on dynamic pendant drop volume analysis

We present a simplified correlation for calculating the dissolved gas moles in a pendant drop during the diffusion time, for several drop shapes. After this correlation is determined, the Yang and Gu (Ind Eng Chem Res 44:4474–4483, 2005) dynamic pendant drop volume analysis (DPDVA) method for calculation of mass diffusivity from the pendant drop volume variation against time can be used. We solved the differential equation in cylindrical coordinates for the mass transfer model of the gas diffusion into the liquid inside the pendant drop, using a different characteristic length (L_C), instead of the outer radius of the syringe needle (r_n) used in Yang and Gu (Ind Eng Chem Res 44:4474–4483, 2005) for defining the dimensionless variables. L_C is the relationship between the pendant drop volume and its mass transfer surface area at the initial conditions. The generalized correlation saves time, simplifies the method application and the deviations in the diffusion coefficient calculation respect to the complete Yang and Gu model are below 6%.     

Effect of acetate on ferrihydrite crystallization

Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to follow the aging of ferrihydrite with different amounts of acetate, to achieve more crystalline products. Mössbauer spectra of fresh samples did not show any magnetic components. After two years aging, the solids presented crystalline fractions. Hematite formation was inhibited as acetate content increased in solids. For an acetate/iron molar ratio equal to 0.63 goethite was formed instead of hematite. X-ray diffraction confirmed these results. This work shows that synthetic samples can be used for elucidating the anti-hematitic effect of organic matter already detected in soils.     

Multipliers of spherical harmonics and energy of measures on the sphere

We consider the operator,f(Δ) for Δ the Laplacian, on spaces of measures on the sphere inR ^d , show how to determine a family of approximating kernels for this operator assuming that certain technical conditions are satisfied, and give estimates for theL²-norm off(Δ)μ in terms of the energy of the measure μ. We derive a formula, analogous to the classical formula relating the energy of a measure onR ^d with its Fourier transform, comparing the energy of a measure on the sphere with the size of its spherical harmonics. An application is given to pluriharmonic measures.     

Operator–valued Fourier multiplier theorems on Besov spaces

We investigate analytical properties of a measure geometric Laplacian which is given as the second derivative w.r.t. two atomless finite Borel measures μ and ν with compact supports supp μ ? supp ν on the real line. This class of operators includes a generalization of the well‐known Sturm‐Liouville operator as well as of the measure geometric Laplacian given by . We obtain for this differential operator under both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions similar properties as known in the classical Lebesgue case for the euclidean Laplacian like Gauß‐Green‐formula, inversion formula, compactness of the resolvent and its kernel representation w.r.t. the corresponding Green function. Finally we prove nuclearity of the resolvent and give two representations of its trace.     

Methodological reflections on a three-step-design combining observation,stimulated recall and interview

In this paper a tripartite qualitative design combining abservation, stimulated recall and interview is presented and discussed. This three-step-design makes it possible to get insight into the interaction of internal and external processes when solving mathematical tasks. The data analysis depends on the research question and the methodological approach. In the light of two research projects in mathematics education two different methods of data analysis are presented and methodologically reflected.
