Prompt fission induced by antiproton annihilation at rest on heavy nuclei

Antiproton induced fission probabilities of U²³⁸, Bi²⁰⁹, Pb²⁰⁸ and Au¹⁷⁷ are reported together with the mass distribution of the fission fragments in the U²³⁸ and Bi²⁰⁹ cases. The charged particles multiplicities observed in co-incidence with fission have, also, been measured for U and Bi and are presented.Dedicated to Peter Armbruster on the occasion of his 60th birthday in recognition of his important contribution to modern Nuclear Physics     

Analysis of rotation curves in the framework of the gravitational suppression model

We present an analysis of suitable rotation curves (RCs) of eight galaxies, aimed at checking the consistency and universality of the gravitational suppression (GraS) hypothesis, a phenomenological model for a new interaction between dark matter and baryons. Motivated by the puzzle of the core versus cusp distribution of dark matter in the center of halos, this hypothesis claims to reconcile the predictions from N-body Lambda cold dark matter simulations with kinematic observations. The GraS model improves the kinematic fitting residuals, but the mass parameters are unphysical and put the theory in difficulty.     

Effect of defect scattering on anisotropic phonon density in metal films

The effect of defect phonon scattering on the spatial dependence of the distribution of phonons generated by Joule heating in metal films is studied. This interaction process is shown to significantly modify the dependence on the direction of propagation of the phonon energy density spectrum.     

Middle‐School Mathematics Teachers' Beliefs in NCTM's Vision

This study examined the extent to which seventh‐ and eighth‐grade mathematics teachers are aware of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards documents, Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and agree with NCTM's vision of school mathematics as expressed in these documents. Quantitative data were collected through the Mathematics Standards Belief Survey (MSBS), a survey specifically designed to measure teachers' overall belief in NCTM's vision as well as in certain philosophical tenets of NCTM. Of the 82 seventh‐ and eighth‐grade mathematics teachers in the identified school district of Nevada, 73 (89.0%) participated in this study. The data revealed that, among seventh‐ and eighth‐grade mathematics teachers, secondary‐certified teachers had significantly higher MSBS scores than elementary‐certified teachers. A number of other findings were made, including significant differences among mean belief scores in the philosophical tenets of NCTM.     

Shape coexistence at high spin in187Au

High-spin states in¹⁸⁷Au have been populated in the¹⁷²Yb(¹⁹F, 4n) reaction and studied with in-beam spectroscopic techniques using the “Château de Cristal” 4π-multidetector array. A comprehensive level scheme of¹⁸⁷Au has been established. Experimental band crossing frequencies and gains in alignment were deduced. Shape coexistence in¹⁸⁷Au, well established at low spin, is found to survive up to spin 57/2, and manifests itself through well separated oblate and prolate structures.     

Fracture Mechanics of Rubber Material

This contribution presents an approach based on the material force method which allows to evaluate the fracture sensitivity of rubber material. In order to account for the rate–independent dissipation of filled elastomers subjected to low rates, an endochronic plasticity formulation is introduced. It is shown how configurational forces under consideration of material body forces correspond with the elastic and dissipative energy and how they can be related to energy release rates measured in test configurations.
