We present a modified mathematical expression for the interfacial tension of very thin films. At large thicknesses the modified expression converges to the classic mathematical expression. We use this modified expression to derive an equation for the spreading coefficient as a function of film thickness. The spreading coefficient equation is then used to calculate the equilibrium thickness of a wetting liquid film for a "pancake drop". Our predictions agree with experimental data. We use a pulse of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) to control the electron population and depopulation of a quantum dot. The barriers between the dot and reservoirs are set high to isolate the dot. Within a time scale of approximately 100 s the dot can be set to a nonequilibrium charge state, where an empty (occupied) level stays below (above) the Fermi energy. A pulse containing a fixed number of SAW periods is sent through the dot, controllably changing the potential, and hence the tunneling probability, to add (remove) an electron to (from) the dot. 相似文献

An early church decoration project carried out by Sir Ninian Comper in 1896–98, involving the rood screen and canopy in St.
Mary’s, Egmanton, is currently undergoing restoration. Despite the rather prolific works of this famous ecclesiastical architect,
there is little information available about the actual pigments that he used in his projects that gave rise to the special
nomenclature “Comper green” and “Comper red”. Specimens of green, red, black, grey, white and blue paint from this work have
been made available for Raman spectroscopic analysis, and their identification has been achieved for the first time. The characteristic
red and green pigments used in Comper’s work, Comper green and Comper red, are both seen to be mixtures; in the former, Raman
bands from chrome yellow (lead(II) chromate) and Prussian blue are identified, and the latter is confirmed as being a mixture
of vermilion (mercury(II) sulfide) and barytes (barium sulfate). The other colours are found to represent a rich diversity
of palette and include haematite, lead tin yellow (type II), lamp black, gypsum, anhydrite, hydrocerussite and calcite. The
information from this first Raman spectroscopic study of Comper’s palette will assist the conservation and restoration of

We investigate the conductance of quantum wires with a variable open quantum dot geometry, displaying an exceptionally strong Kondo effect and most of the 0.7 structure characteristics. Our results indicate that the 0.7 structure is not a manifestation of the singlet Kondo effect. However, specific similarities between our devices and many of the clean quantum wires reported in the literature suggest a weakly bound state is often present in real quantum wires. 相似文献

The beta decay of 33Mg (N=21) presented in this Letter reveals intruder configurations in both the parent and the daughter nucleus. The lowest excited states in the N=20 daughter nucleus, 33Al, are found to have nearly 2p-2h intruder configuration, thus extending the "island of inversion" beyond Mg. The allowed direct beta-decay branch to the 5/2{+} ground state of the daughter nucleus 33Al implies positive parity for the ground state of the parent 33Mg, contrary to an earlier suggestion of negative parity from a g-factor measurement. An admixture of 1p-1h and 3p-3h configurations is proposed for the ground state of 33Mg to explain all of the experimental observables. 相似文献

Summary The capillary rise of aqueous solutions of anionic wetting agents into a compacted powder of an organic chromium complex is discussed on the basis of the Washburn-Rideal equation expanded to account for the porous structure parameters.At the porosity 1 —/6, corresponding to the loosest packing of monodisperse spheres the penetration rate is found to be mostly governed by the effective tensions operative at the moving three phase line of contact in case no deflocculation intervenes.
