On the permanence of the null character of Maxwell fields

A critical review of known results about the permanence conditions for the null character of the solutions to the (vacuum) Maxwell equations, is presented. Concomitants of the electromagnetic field and the metric tensor are constructed, which give the principal directions of the field in covariant form. The known permanence conditions are generalized in order to includeall the (local) null fields; the above concomitants allow these conditions to be explicitly formulated in terms of the electromagnetic field.Supported in part by Conselleria de Cultura, Educació i Ciència de la Generalitat Valenciana.     

Laser properties of coactivated YAP: Nd free of colour centres

YAP:Nd, Cr grown under Ar-H₂ or Ar-He-H₂ atmosphere possesses good energy transfer from Cr³⁺ to Nd³⁺ but suffers from the colour centre formation. The centre formation was completely prevented using further admixture of Ce³⁺ and 10^–4–10^–3 wt. % Fe. Small luminescence quenching of Cr³⁺ or Nd³⁺ due to iron ions is negligible in the presence of Ce³⁺. The crystals may be also heavily doped with Nd³⁺ because the increased pumping efficiency compensates the shortening of the luminescence lifetime. YAP: Nd, Ce, Cr, Fe is advisible active laser material particularly for all the types of pulsed lasers.     

Unified fields of analytic space-time-energy

An analytic gravitational fieldZ (Z ^y ) is shown to include electromagnetic phenomena. In an almost flat and almost static complex geometryds ² =zdzdz of four complex variables z=t, x, y, x the field equationsR Rz = –(U U – Z ) imply the conventional equations of motion and the conventional electromagnetic field equations to first order if =(Z ^v) and =(z ) are expressed in terms of the conventional mass density function , the conventional charge density function , and a pressurep as follows: v=const=p/c ²–10^–29 gm/cm³.     

Existence and equivalence of twisted products on a symplectic manifold

The twisted products play an important role in Quantum Mechanics [1, 2]. We introduce here a distinction between Vey *_ν-products and strong Vey *_ν-products and prove that each *_ν-product is equivalent to a Vey *_ν-product. If b ₃(W)=0, the symplectic manifold (W, F) admits strong Vey *_ν-products. If b ₂(W)=0, all *_ν-products are equivalent as well as the Vey Lie algebras. In the general case, we characterize the formal Lie algebras which are generated by a *_ν-product and we prove that the existence of a *_ν-product is equivalent to the existence of a formal Lie algebra infinitesimally equivalent to a Vey Lie algebra at the first order.     

Newtonian limits of warp drive spacetimes

We find a class of warp drive spacetimes possessing Newtonian limits, which we then determine. The same method is used to compute Newtonian limits of the Schwarzschild solution and spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological models. Mid-infrared supercontinuum generation to 4.5 microm in ZBLAN fluoride fibers by nanosecond diode pumping

A mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC) is generated in ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF...) fluoride fibers from amplified nanosecond laser diode pulses with a continuous spectrum from approximately 0.8 microm to beyond 4.5 microm. The SC has an average power of approximately 23 mW, a pump-to-SC power conversion efficiency exceeding 50%, and a spectral power density of approximately -20 dBm/nm over a large fraction of the spectrum. The SC generation is initiated by the breakup of nanosecond laser diode pulses into femtosecond pulses through modulation instability, and the spectrum is then broadened primarily through fiber nonlinearities in approximately 2-7 m lengths of ZBLAN fiber. The SC long-wavelength edge is consistent with the intrinsic ZBLAN material absorption.
