The solution of a convection–diffusion–reaction equation arising from cathodic reduction in a pulsating crack

This paper derives the convection–diffusion-reaction equation governing the reaction between the dissolved oxygen in sea-water and the steel walls of a pulsating crack. By the neglect of the diffusion term it is shown that an exact solution of the convection-reaction equation can be obtained. A numerical method for the solution of the complete convection–diffusion-reaction equation is derived by the use of finite differences. The numerical computation of the initial transient and the final periodic steady-state values is also discussed.     

Molecular crystal structure and chemical properties of 4-phenyl-3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,2,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydropyridine

The molecular crystal structure of 4-phenyl-3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,2,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydropyridine has been investigated by x-ray structural analysis. The three-dimensional structural properties of the molecule have been compared against the large observed reactivity of the 3-ethoxycarbonyl group with respect to nucleophilic substitution reactions.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 9, pp. 1236–1239, September, 1991.     

Synthesis of an asymmetric fullerene dimer via sequential cycloadditions

A single isomer of a monofunctionalised C₇₀ fullerene is isolated and characterised using variable temperature NMR spectroscopy. Pendant methylene bromide groups allow for further cycloaddition reactions and a C₆₀-C₇₀ asymmetric fullerene dimer is thus prepared.     

A six-step synthesis of (S)-5-ethenyl-3-(1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinyl)pyridine (SIB-1508Y) from (S)-nicotine

The anti-Parkinson’s agent SIB-1508Y was prepared in six steps from (S)-nicotine in 20% overall yield. The strategy involves a regioselective formylation at C-5 of a 1,4-dihydronicotine intermediate.

Study to improve the quality of a Mexican straight run gasoil over NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts

Four NiMo catalyst supported on Al₂O₃ with different textural properties have been studied in the hydrodesulfurization (HDS), hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) and hydrodearomatization (HDA) of a Mexican straight run gasoil (SRGO). All reactions were carried out at three different temperatures 613, 633, and 653 K. Alumina supports were analysed by pyridine FTIR-TPD and nitrogen physisorption in order to determine their surface acidity and textural properties, respectively. TPR studies of the NiMo catalysts were analysed to correlate their hydrogenating properties. Metallic particles were characterized (after sulfidation) using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Catalytic activities are discussed in relation to the physicochemical properties of NiMo catalysts. The importance of textural properties on coke deposition has been emphasized. The results of catalytic activity of these materials varied depending on dispersed MoS particles and pore distribution in final catalysts. The optimum pore diameter was found around 80 Å for HDS and HDN.     

Polarization-phase mapping and reconstruction of biological tissue architectonics during diagnosis of pathological lesions

Specific features of the formation of local and statistical polarization structures of laser radiation scattered in phase-inhomogeneous layers (PIL) of biological tissue (BT) were studied. The distribution of azimuth and eccentricity of boundary field polarization was found to correlate with the orientation-phase structure of multifractal PIL. A method of polarization phase reconstruction of BT architectonics was suggested.     

Study of the spectrum of cherenkov light

It is pessible to study experimentally Cherenkov light spectra in a liquid scintillation spectrometer with colour filters. Cherenkov light spectra of⁶⁰Co,¹⁹⁸Au,¹¹⁵Cd,¹⁴³Ce,¹⁴⁰La,³²P,⁸⁶Rb,⁷⁶As,⁴²K and an external standard were studied in a Packard 3375 type liquid scintillation spectrometer, using 11 various Kodak Wratten filters. The absorption maxima of the filters ware in the 410–796 nm interval.     

Properties of (InGa)As/GaAs QW (λ ≈ 1.2 µm) facet-coated edge emitting diode laser

In this paper, we report on the design and optical properties of laser diodes with an emission wave-length of ～1170 nm based on an (InGa)As/GaAs double quantum well active layer. The back and front facet of the laser diodes were coated with SiO_x dielectric films that influence the output optical power by enhancing or lowering the facet reflectivity. The measurements show improvement of the facet-coated laser diode properties in the threshold-current-density reduction along with light output power enhancement. Furthermore, a narrow far field pattern and high side mode suppression have been observed.
