(II) Infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of some transition metal dithiocarbamates and xanthates

Measurements are presented for the binding energy variations of (a) (Ni, Cu) 2p_{$\text{3}\text{2}$}, S 2p and N 1s core levels in a series of Ni and Cu disubstituted dithiocarbamates and (b) (Ni, Cu) 2p_{$\text{3}\text{2}$}, and S 2p core levels in a series of Ni xanthates. These shifts, which are observed to be negative and quite large for the S 2p levels, are then correlated with the infrared absorption frequency variations for the associated intramolecular stretching vibrations of the same series. The results are interpreted in terms of a model based on atomic charges and their potential effects on both variations. The functional relationships between the binding energy and infrared frequency variations are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results.     

Electrodynamics of rotating superconducting interferometers

Some aspects of the theory of superconductors in noninertial frames are clarified. Interference effects, such as that observed by Zimmerman and Mercereau on rotation of a SQUID, would be destroyed if the apparatus were shielded by a superconducting shell.     

Functionalized higher acenes: hexacene and heptacene

We have extended our functionalization strategy for pentacene to the higher acenes hexacene and heptacene. Provided a large enough alkyne substituent is used, these large aromatic rods are both stable and soluble and can be characterized spectroscopically as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.     

Incremental collapse of thick-walled circular cylinders under steady axial tension and torsion loads and cyclic transient heating

The accumulation of plastic strain over a number of cycles of heating and cooling of the outer surface of a loaded thick-walled circular cylinder is computed. Two types of loadings are considered, viz. pure axial torsion and a combination of torsion and tension. The cylinder material is taken to be isotropic and linear strain-hardening; its yield stress reduces with temperature and with the number of thermal cycles completed. This cyclic softening is shown to produce an incremental collapse or ratcheting behaviour in contrast to the alternating plasticity which occurs when the yield stress on first loading is maintained.     

On singular perturbation in non well posed problems

Summary Let L_εu and L ₀ v be the elliptic and “backward” heat operators defined by(1.1) and(1.2), respectively. The following question is considered for a pair of “non-well posed” initial-boundary value problems for L_ε and L ₀ : if u and v are the respective solutions, under what restrictions on the classes of admissible solutions and in what sense, if any, does u converge to v as ɛ →0? Some superadditivity results in the torsion problem for multiply connected cross sections

In this note we prove strong superadditivity properties of the stress function in the elastic torsion problem for multiply connected regions. The results are extended to associated Green's functions and other domain functions.
