Micron-particulate crystalline hexagonal aluminium nitride: a novel, efficient and versatile heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of some heterocyclic compounds

The present work reports the application of micron-particulate crystalline hexagonal aluminium nitride/aluminium as a novel, mild acidic and reusable solid heterogeneous catalyst in organic synthesis. The catalyst was synthesized by thermal plasma technique and characterized using X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscopy. It catalyzes efficiently many organic transformations such as the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds 2,4,5-triaryl-substituted imidazoles and 2-aryl benzimidazoles.     

Synthesis of Some Biologically Active Pyrazole, Thiazolidinone, and Azetidinone Derivatives

Pyrazole, thiazolidinone, and azetidinone derivatives were synthesized from chalcones of 4-hydroxycoumarin. The structures of all the synthesized compounds were confirmed on the basis of spectral and analytical data. The compounds were screened in vitro for their antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains.     

Microwave-assisted Sinthesis of Thymyl Ethers and Esters in Aqueous Medium

Various thymyl ethers and esters have been synthesized by reactions of thymol with alkyl halides and acid chlorides, respectively, in aqueous medium under environmentally benign conditions using micro-wave irradiation. The products are important as potent pest managing agents.     

Chiral stationary phases for separation of intermedine and lycopsamine enantiomers from Symphytum uplandicum

Enantioseparation of the pyrrolizidine alkaloid isomers intermedine and lycopsamine, isolated from Symphytum uplandicum, is discussed. The separatory power of two immobilized carbohydrate‐based chiral HPLC columns, Chiralpak IA and IC, in different chromatographic conditions is compared. The study demonstrated the importance of solvent and column selection while developing such chiral HPLC separation methods. The baseline HPLC separation of the two alkaloid isomers in preparatory scale is reported for the first time. The optimized separations were achieved on a Chiralpak IA column with mobile phases of ACN/methanol (80:20) and methanol/methyl‐t‐butyl ether (90:10), both containing 0.1% diethylamine.     

Development and validation of a highly sensitive LC‐MS/MS‐ESI method for the determination of bicalutamide in mouse plasma: application to a pharmacokinetic study

A highly sensitive, rapid assay method has been developed and validated for the estimation of bicalutamide in mouse plasma using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization in the negative‐ion mode. The assay procedure involves extraction of bicalutamide and tolbutamide (internal standard, IS) from mouse plasma with a simple protein precipitation method. Chromatographic separation was achieved using an isocratic mobile phase (0.2% formic acid:acetonitrile, 35:65, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min on an Atlantis dC₁₈ column (maintained at 40 ± 1°C) with a total run time of 3.0 min. The MS/MS ion transitions monitored were m/z 428.9 → 254.7 for bicalutamide and m/z 269.0 → 169.6 for IS. Method validation was performed as per FDA guidelines and the results met the acceptance criteria. The lower limit of quantitation achieved was 1.04 ng/mL and the linearity range extended from 1.04 to 1877 ng/mL. The intra‐ and inter‐day precisions were in the ranges of 0.49–4.68 and 2.62–4.15, respectively. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Recovery of americium from nitric acid solutions containing calcium by different co-precipitation methods

Recovery of americium from nitric acid solutions was studied by co-precipitation as hydroxide with various ions like calcium, ferric, nickel using sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide. Studies were also carried out to recover americium using lanthanum fluoride and bismuth phosphate co-precipitation. All the methods are able to co-precipitate Am quantitatively. However, co-precipitation of Am with optimum concentration iron using ammonia is found to be better from nitric acid solutions containing large concentrations of calcium ions. Approximately 2 g of Am was recovered from 150 litres of solution batch wise using iron.     

Aluminium nitride catalyzed solvent-free synthesis of some novel biologically active α-aminophosphonates

A green and atom-efficient one-pot protocol for the synthesis of some novel α-aminophosphonates using micron-particulate AlN/Al as a new reusable heterogeneous catalyst by the Kabachnik–Fields reaction under solvent-free conditions has been developed. The synthesized α-aminophosphonates were screened for several biological activities. They all were investigated to exhibit moderate to promising antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic properties.     

Novel one-pot synthesis of 4H-chromene derivatives using amino functionalized silica gel catalyst

A simple, efficient, and environmentally benign method for the synthesis of 4H-chromene derivatives was developed using well ordered and recoverable amino functionalized silica gel as a base catalyst. The 4H-chromene derivatives were obtained in short time and excellent yield(87%–96%) by three component reaction of aldehydes, malononitrile and cyclic 1,3-diketones in water at 70 8C.
