Search for <Emphasis Type="Italic">P</Emphasis>-odd asymmetry of prompt neutron emission in <Superscript>235</Superscript>U fission induced by cold polarized neutrons

The preliminary result of the P-odd asymmetry of prompt neutron emission in ²³⁵U fission induced by polarized cold neutrons is a=(2.7±0.8)×10^?5. Only scission neutrons can show such asymmetry, whereas neutrons emitted by excited fragments are the unavoidable background, which suppress the sought asymmetry. The P-odd asymmetry of light fragment emission for ²³⁵U is equal to (8.4±0.6)×10^?5. Assuming that the last figure defines the parity mixture of the fissile nucleus, then the suppression factor is equal approximately to 3.     

Aptamer-functionalized Au nanoparticles for the amplified optical detection of thrombin

The catalytic enlargement of aptamer-functionalized Au nanoparticles amplifies the optical detection of aptamer-thrombin complexes in solution and on surfaces.     

Epithermal neutron activation analysis of Spirulina platensis biomass and extracted C-phycocianin and DNA

Epithermal neutron activation analysis (ENAA) was used for study the biomass of Spirulina platensis. The background levels of concentration 27 macro-, micro- and trace elements ranging from 10^-3 to 10⁴ ppm was determined. It was found that the biomass of Spirulina does not contain toxic element concentrations above the tolerance level and can be utilized as a matrix of pharmaceuticals. The conentrations of basic elements in C-phycocianin and DNA extracted from Spirulina platensis were determined by ENAA. A comparison of the element content of a whole Spirulina biomass with that of a refined C-phycocianin preparation was made.     

Laser transitions under resonant optical pumping of donor centres in Si:P

Terahertz stimulated emission of phosphorus donors in silicon optically excited by radiation from the free-electron laser FELIX has been studied. It is found that a spectral line of the Si:P laser emission depends on pump frequency. Stimulated emission arises on the 2p₀→1s(E) intra-centre transition (21.2 meV) under resonant pumping of the 2p₀ state and on the 2p₀→1s(T₂) transition (22.3 meV) under pumping of the 2p_± or higher odd-parity donor states. The line shift is attributed to the Auger redistribution of the 1s(E)- and 1s(T₂)-state populations. Structure and Reactivity of Glycosides: IV. Koenigs-Knorr Synthesis of Aryl β-D-Glucopyranosides Using Phase-Transfer Catalysts

A series of acetylated aryl -D-glucopyranosides were prepared in 12-63% yields from tetra-O- acetyl--D-glycopyranosyl bromide and phenols containing acyl, formyl, and hydroxy substituents, and also from sterically hindered phenols in the two-phase system chloroform-aqueous alkali in the presence of triethylbenzylammonium chloride. Hydroxyethylated sucrose and dibenzo-18-crown-6 do not behave as phasetransfer catalysts in glycosylation of phenols.     

The Generalized Chern Character and Lefschetz Numbers in W*-Modules

We define N-theory as being an analogue of K-theory on the category of von Neumann algebras such that K ₀(A)N ₀(A) for any von Neumann algebra A. Moreover, it turns out to be possible to construct the extension of the Chern character to some homomorphism from N ₀(A) to an even Banach cyclic homology of A. Also, we define generalized Lefschetz numbers for an arbitrary unitary endomorphism U of an A-elliptic complex. We study them in the situation when U is an element of a representation of some compact Lie group.

Determination of the magnetic symmetry of hexagonal manganites by second harmonic generation

Optical second harmonic spectroscopy is introduced as a powerful supplement for the determination of complex magnetic structures. Experimental efforts are simplified and new degrees of freedom are opened. Thereby, some principal or technical restrictions of neutron or magnetic x-ray diffraction experiments are overcome. High spatial resolution leads to additional information about magnetically ordered matter. As an example, the noncollinear magnetic structure of the hexagonal manganites RMnO3 ( R = Sc, Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) is analyzed. The results show that some earlier conclusions on their magnetic symmetry and properties should be revised.
