The fracture energy of materials under pulse microsecond-scale loading

Based on the results of fracture in polymethyl methacrylate and a spheroplastic using a magnetic-pulse setup, the specific work of the formation of a new surface is estimated, which is similar to Griffith’s surface energy for quasi-static tests. The value obtained is greater than the corresponding value determined from the quasi-static tests by an order of magnitude and tends to increase as the loading time decreases.     

Reaction Medium and Kinetics of N-Vinylsuccinimide Copolymerization

Studies in the field of radical copolymerization of N-vinylsuccinimide were summarized, theeffect of the reaction medium on the process kinetics was examined. Factors governing the relative activity ofthe monomers were revealed, and ways to control the reactivity of N-vinylsuccinimide in binary copolymerizations were suggested.     

What is a design? How should we classify them?

Design theory crosses the boundary between mathematics and statistics, and includes a wide range of disparate types of design. In this paper we present a classification scheme which aims to include as many important types as possible, based on a balance among concept, representation and use.     

Asymptotic conditions for the electromagnetic form factors of hadrons represented by the VMD model

A system of linear homogeneous algebraic equations for the coupling constant ratios of vector mesons to hadrons is derived by imposing the assumed asymptotic behavior upon the VMD pole parameterization of an hadron electromagnetic form factor. A similar system of equations with a simpler structure of the coefficients, taken as even powers of the vector-meson masses, is derived by means of integral superconvergent sum rules for the imaginary part of the considered form factor using its appropriate -function approximation. Although both systems have been derived starting from different properties of the electromagnetic form factor and they each have their own appearances, it is shown explicitly that they are fully equivalent. Investigation of anode and cathode jets influence on electric arc properties with current up to 500 kA

A number of phenomena connected with the formation of electrode jets in discharges in hydrogen at a current of 10/sup 5/-10/sup 6/ A, a current growth rate of 10/sup 10/ A/s, an initial pressure 0.1-4.0 MPa, and a discharge gap length of 5-40 mm were studied. After the secondary breakdown, the jets are observed through a discharge semitransparent channel, widening with velocity (4-7) /spl middot/ 10/sup 2/ m/s. Shockwave formation was detected at the interaction of jets with the surrounding gas and the opposite electrode. Plasma vapor pressure of metal near the end of the tungsten cathode 70 /spl mu/s after initiation of a discharge was 180 MPa. Thus, magnitude of brightness temperature was 59 /spl middot/ 10/sup 3/ K, with an average charge of ions-m~=3.1, and a concentration of metal vapors n=5.3/spl middot/10/sup 19/ cm/sup -3/. While those at the end of the anode 90 /spl mu/s after initiation of discharge: m~=2.6, n=7.4/spl middot/10/sup 19/ cm/sup -3/. Probable reasons of high-voltage drops near the electrodes (the summarized magnitude of which is /spl sim/1 kV) are discussed on the basis of experimental data. For the first time, the shadow method registered symmetric ejection of material from the all-cathode surface the maximum discharge current was observed.     

Conditional expectation of integrands and random sets

The conditional expectation of integrands and random sets is the main tool of stochastic optimization. This work wishes to make up for the lack of real synthesis about this subject. We improve the existing hypothesis and simplify the corresponding proofs. In the convex case we especially study the problem of the exchange of conditional expectation and subdifferential operators.     

On some periodic solutions of singularly perturbed parabolic equations

New methods for proving the existence and stability of periodic solutions in singularly perturbed delay systems

We carry out a detailed analysis of the existence, asymptotics, and stability problems for periodic solutions that bifurcate from the zero equilibrium state in systems with large delay. The account is based on a specific meaningful example given by a certain scalar nonlinear second-order differential-difference equation that is a mathematical model of a single-circuit RCL oscillator with delay in a feedback loop.     

Smooth Frame-Path Termination for Higher Order Sigma-Delta Quantization

We study the performance of finite frames for the encoding of vectors by applying standard higher-order sigma-delta quantization to the frame coefficients. Our results are valid for any quantizer with accuracy ε > 0 operating in the no-overload regime. The frames under consideration are obtained from regular sampling of a path in a Hilbert space. In order to achieve error bounds that are comparable to results on higher-order sigma-delta for the quantization of oversampled bandlimited functions, we construct frame paths that terminate smoothly in the zero vector, that is, with an appropriate number of vanishing derivatives at the endpoint.
