Chemical constituents from the roots of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Polygonum bistorta</Emphasis>

Investigation of the roots of Polygonum bistorta L. afforded seven compounds including five triterpenoids, a coumarin, and a steroid, the structures of which were identified by EIMS, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, DEPT, and HMBC experiments. All the compounds have been isolated from Polygonum genus for the first time. Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 5, pp. 463–465, September–October, 2007.     

Synthesis and characterization of cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), palladium(II) and dioxouranium(VI) complexes of the antipyrine Schiff base of 3-formylsalicylic acid

A new Schiff base has been synthesized from 4-aminoantipyrine and 3-formylsalicylic acid. The ligand has a dianionic tetradentate compartmental OONO donor system. The cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and dioxouranium(VI) complexes exist in phenolato-bridged dinuclear species, while palladium(II) gives a mononuclear complex with free –COOH groups. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, i.r., u.v.-vis, thermal and magnetic measurements.     

Carboxylic Acids from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Phyllanthus urinaria</Emphasis>

Five compounds, terephthalic acid mono-[2-(4-carboxy-phenoxycarbonyl)-vinyl] ester (1), (E)-3-(5′-hydroperoxy-2,2′-dihydroxy[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-2-propenoic acid (2), 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid (3), succinic acid (or butanedioic acid) (4), and 2,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxybenzoic acid (5), were isolated from Phyllanthus urinaria. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by means of spectral techniques including IR, MS, and 1D/2D NMR. 1 and 2 are new compounds.__________Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 1, pp. 14–17, January–February, 2005.     

Highly efficient recycling of a "sandwich" type polyoxometalate oxidation catalyst using solvent resistant nanofiltration

A "sandwich" type polyoxometalate catalyst ([MeN(n-C8H17)3]12[WZn3(ZnW9O34)2]) was very efficiently recycled by nanofiltration with almost quantitative retention, using an alpha-alumina supported mesoporous gamma-alumina membrane.     

Procedures for the enhancement of selectivity in liquid phase chemiluminescence detection

An overview of liquid phase chemiluminescence (CL) processes is presented and the potential for CL detection in liquid chromatography (LC) is discussed, with particular reference to the luminol and peroxyoxalate reactions. Post column ion displacement from a solid phase reagent [a cation exchange resin in the copper(II) form] followed by catalysis of the luminol reaction is used for the quantification of mixtures of weak acids after separation by ion-exclusion chromatography. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released during the combustion of biomass fuels are separated by reversed-phase chromatography and quantified by their sensitizing effect on the peroxyoxalate reaction. This procedure is also used for the determination of carboxylic acids in non-aqueous media after selective pre-column derivatization with a fluorescent label (9-anthracenemethanol).     

Sol–gel preparation and properties of hydroxypropylcellulose–titania hybrid thin films

Hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC)–titania hybrid thin films were prepared by sol–gel method where titanium tetraisopropoxide Ti(OC₃H₇ ⁱ )₄ was hydrolyzed under acidic conditions in the presence of HPC, followed by dip-coating and drying at 120 °C for 24 h. The viscosity average molecular weight of HPC was 55,000–70,000 or 110,000–150,000, and the TiO₂/(HPC + TiO₂) mass ratio ranged from 0 to 1, which was calculated on the assumption that all Ti(OC₃H₇ ⁱ )₄ is converted into TiO₂. The films were 0.35–1.0 μm thick, transparent in visible region and opaque in ultraviolet (UV) region, where the optical absorption coefficient in UV region increased with increasing titania content. The refractive index increased with increasing titania content, ranging from 1.6 to 1.8 for the hybrid thin films. The pencil hardness increased from 6B to 5H, the durability in hot water significantly increased and the contact angle of water on films increased from 35° to 89° with increasing titania content. Crack-free films could be deposited on organic polymer substrates irrespective of titania or HPC contents, where cracking did not occur at higher HPC contents even when the substrate was bent.     

Competing reaction pathways from α-halo-α-protioalkyl aryl sulfoxides initiated by organometallic reagents

The reactions of syn-1-haloethyl p-chlorophenyl sulfoxides (halogen = Cl, Br) with main-group organometallic reagents (n-BuMgCl, MeLi, n-BuLi, s-BuLi, and t-BuLi) in THF and PhMe solvents were examined. Product distributions were analyzed to determine the extent of competing sulfoxide ligand exchange, halogen-metal exchange, and deprotonation reaction pathways. A combination of t-BuLi in PhMe was optimal for initiation of sulfoxide ligand exchange from syn-1-chloroethyl p-chlorophenyl sulfoxide.     

Conductances of some electrolytes in 2-methylpyridine-N-oxide at 55°C

Conductance measurements for fifteen uni-univalent salts in 2-methylpyridine-N-oxide (2-MPO) were made over the concentration range of 2–120×10^–4 mol-dm^–3 at 55°C. All conductance data were evaluated by the Lee-Wheaton equation. The results indicate that all of the salts studied are slightly associated in 2-MPO, which is, nevertheless, a reasonably good ionizing solvent compared to other solvents having a similar value for the dielectric constant. The tetraalkylammonium halides are weaker electrolytes than the tetraphenylborate salts in 2-MPO. Ionic limiting molar conductances were obtained by using as a reference electrolyte tris(iso-pentyl)butylammonium tetraphenylborate. Anions appear to be poorly solvated in this solvent but certain cations, particularly Na⁺ and K⁺, show evidence of specific ion-solvent interaction.This study was presented, in part, at the 6th Central Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Detroit, Michigan, April 1974.     

Photochemistry of Isothiocoumarin (= 1H-[2]benzothiopyran-1-one)

Irradiation (λ = 350 nm) of 1H-[2]benzothiopyran-1-one ( 2 ) in the solid state affords selectively and in good yield 6aα, 6bα, 12bα, 12cα -tetrahydrocyclobuta[1, 2-c:4, 3-c′]bis([2]benzothiopyran)-5, 8-dione ( 3 ), the head-to-head (HH) cis-cisoid-cis-cyclodimer of 2 , X-Ray analysis of 2 confirms that this reaction proceeds according to the well-established topochemical principles. The same dimer 3 is obtained in low yields on irradiation of 10⁻¹ M solutions of 2 in either MeOH or MeCN, while no conversion at all is observed in benzene. On irradiation of 2 in MeCN in the presence of tetrachloroethene, the [2 + 2] photocycloadduct 4 is formed in good yield, the conversion 2 → 4 being efficiently quenched by naphthalene. In contrast, no reaction is observed -on irradiation of 2 in the presence of 2, 3-dimethylbut-2-ene, neither in polar nor in apolar solvents.     

The Raman active internal vibrational modes of potassium nitrate

The Raman active internal vibrational modes of single crystal orthorhombic potassium nitrate have been studied in various polarizations. The full multiplet structure predicted by factor group analysis for the v₂ and v₃ regions has been observed for the first time. The expected site group splitting of the v₄ mode was not observed and can be assumed to be less than 0.5 cm^?1.
