Excess enthalpies of some 2-alkanone + 1-chloroalkane binary mixtures at 25 and 35°C

Excess molar enthalpies h^E at 25 and 35° C and atmospheric pressure, are reported for the binary mixtures formed by a 2-butanone and 2-pentanone with 1-chlorobutane, 1-chloropentane, 1-chlorohexane, or 1-chlorooctane. The h^E values for all the mixtures are positive, increasing as the 1-chloroalkane length increases and as the ketone length decreases. Excess molar enthalpies depend slightly on the temperature. The experimental values together with those from the literature were used to calculate the interaction parameters for the Dang-Tassios version of the UNIFAC model.Communicated at the Festsymposium celebrating Dr. Henry V. Fixed-sign solutions for a system of singular focal boundary value problems

We consider a system of focal boundary value problems where the nonlinearities may be singular in the independent variable and may also be singular in the dependent arguments. Using Schauder fixed point theorem, we establish criteria such that the system of boundary value problems has at least one fixed-sign solution.     

Lagrangian Duality in Set-Valued Optimization

In this paper, we study optimization problems where the objective function and the binding constraints are set-valued maps and the solutions are defined by means of set-relations among all the images sets (Kuroiwa, D. in Takahashi, W., Tanaka, T. (eds.) Nonlinear analysis and convex analysis, pp. 221–228, 1999). We introduce a new dual problem, establish some duality theorems and obtain a Lagrangian multiplier rule of nonlinear type under convexity assumptions. A necessary condition and a sufficient condition for the existence of saddle points are given. The authors thank the two referees for valuable comments and suggestions on early versions of the paper. RNA self-splicing and energy localization

We establish a mechanism for energy localization in regions of the sugar-phosphate RNA backbone which leads to the formation of transesterification or hydrolysis hot spots. In particular, our results account for the site specificity of the covalent cyclization and cycle reopening in the catalytic intervening sequence (IVS) of a ribosomal RNA.     

Microperforated insertion units: An alternative strategy to design microperforated panels

Microperforated panels (MPPs) coupled to a rigid wall have been proposed recently as an alternative to porous absorbers in situations having concerns with bacterial contamination and small particles discharge, like food, pharmaceutical and microelectronic industries. There exists also an increasing interest for MPP absorbers in the transportation industry and civil engineering. In general, an optimally designed MPP with good broadband absorption requires many submillimetric holes distributed over a panel of also submillimetric thickness. Such thin plates or foils become so fragile that they need to be protected from mechanical damage. In this paper, an alternative strategy is investigated which allows the design of MPPs with panels of millimetric thickness while maintaining their acoustic performance. These absorbers, named microperforated insertion units (MIUs), avoid the structural problems of the classical MPPs. An assessment of the sound absorption properties of these structures is presented. Comparisons between calculations and measurements are also made under two experimental conditions: plane waves at normal incidence (impedance tube) and free field (anechoic room).     

Preconcentration of trace antimony in tap and sea water on activated alumina. Determination by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Summary A method is described for antimony preconcentration based on retention on a column of activated alumina. Recovery is 80% when no pH-control and 4 mol/l HCl as eluent are used. The preconcentration factor is 400. The method was applied to the determination of antimony in spiked tap and sea water. The analytical performance of the method is discussed.     

Smectic liquid-crystalline phases of F(CF2)7(CHOH)(CH2)8H and F(CF2)9(CHOH)(CH2)10H Comparison with other partially fluorinated molecules

Partially fluorinated alcohols F(CF₂)_m(CHOH)(CH₂)_nH (where m = 7, n = 8 and m = 9, n = 10) exhibit highly ordered smectic liquid-crystalline phases, as confirmed by optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Miscibility studies show that the smectic phases of the two alcohols are not of the same type. The related partially fluorinated ketones F(CF₂)_mCO(CH₂)_nH do not form a detectable mesophase. This is rather surprising since the (more polar) corresponding alcohols and the (less polar) analogous iodides and n-alkanes do. A brief discussion of the results and a comparison among partially fluorinated alkanes with various functional groups are presented.     

Exact and approximate solutions to the Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator with a singular perturbation

I obtain exact solutions for the quantum-mechanical harmonic oscillator with a perturbation potential which belongs to a class of polynomial functions of 1/r. I show that some of the eigenfunctions enable the calculation of expectation values in closed form and are therefore suitable trial functions for the application of the variational method to related nonsolvable problems.
